Meet Red Bull’s Doodle Art winners. ‘I want to show the youth nowadays what is really happening through my art and doodles.’

MANILA, Philippines - A few months ago, Red Bull announced the three winners of their Doodle Art competition. In first place, Patrick Acma of Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College wowed Doodle Art judge Archie Geotina with his mother-and-child work that used mainly contrasting colors and expressions to illustrate a parent’s sacrifice and a child’s chance for a brighter future. Second placer Manuel Liwanag of Mariano Quinto Alarilla Polytechnic College brought pen and ink to life with small details and big ideas in black and white. De La Salle University’s Mabby Triviño came in at third with a doodle riddled with bits and pieces of things she loved — her way of showing others the world through her eyes. Back from conquering new frontiers in South Africa, we talked to the top three and asked them to draw self-portraits for us.

How did you get into art?

Art has been my passion for as long as I can remember. They say everyone is born an artist; the challenge is maintaining it as you grow older. In my case, I practiced and challenged myself every day. From drawing with crayons and jumbo pencils, doodles on my high school textbooks and notebooks during class, realistic sketches and paintings, to digital artworks eventually landing myself a couple of art commissions and freelance gigs, I am now a fresh graduate from DLSU and newly-hired employee for a digital ad agency. I chose this career path so that I could continue to practice my art even at work.

The highlight of my experience during the competition in Cape Town was, honestly, the whole journey and nothing in particular. It’s like studying for an exam and highlighting the whole book because you think everything is important. I think it’s important to note that this was also my first time, not only to travel to Africa, but to travel alone! I cherished everything —from the moment I stepped into Cape Town, to when I got to meet the other contestants from around the world and got to know them and their cultures, got the chance to showcase my artwork at a karaoke installation in Company’s Garden, finally see up-close and personal the breathtaking Table Mountain, up until the very end when I packed my bags and said goodbye to my newfound friends.

How did you get into art?

I got into art when I was still young. I always tended to draw every time I watched animated shows and after I studied my lessons in school.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

I always enjoy making my own concept of animated characters like anime and western-style characters. I am also like painting and making doodles for fun.

Who are your art idols?

I really do not have idols in doodling, I want (to get into) animation and painting. For cartoon characters, I like doodling Stitch and Tarzan.

I had a very great night with all the Red Bull Staff and my new doodle buddies (the other contestants). I thought I would just get bored that night because it was my first time to be in a competition like this one, but I couldn’t help but be happy that time. It was also my first time to meet animator students from my doodle buddies like Fritz, Erika, Rd and others, because being an animator is my biggest dream. It was a happy night.

How did you get into art?

I’ve been drawing since I was a kid. I’d see my ate draw so I copied her. I started drawing anime and then I started joining poster-making (things). And in 2013, I started getting into doodling and it became my forte.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

Meaningful po siya. I think my doodles always have meaning. There are always themes — for example, what’s happening in the country right now, etc. I want to show the youth nowadays what is really happening through my art and doodles.

Who are your art idols?

My idols in doodling are Lei Melendres and Kerby Rosanes. Their work always has a story that you get when you look at the work properly.

I was very happy that day. When they announced the first award, which is the Doodle Design Contest ng WIP Cap, and said that I was the winner, grabe na yung saya ko that time. And when I found that I was also second place sa mismong doodle art competition parang nasa Cloud 9 na po ako.
