Ghost of lovers past

Christopher De Venecia - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - It’s been almost a year since cult streetwear brand The Artisan released its last collection—an all-black sartorial exposition of reworked bomber jackets and baseball jerseys, whose look book was shot up north with eccentric floral headpieces. Eye candy, yes. But in terms of product? No frills, just quality streamlined apparel reminiscent of ‘50s American workwear and the Japanese’s attention to detail.

“It’s always a hodgepodge of experiences that get stitched together and turned into beautiful stories,” shares product designer and proprietor Kix Suarez about the inspiration behind his brand’s comeback collection. “(It)was inspired by how we remember people of our past and how it’s never just one thing that sticks.”

Along with his partners EJ Reyes and Nikko Martinez, Kix assembled a seven-piece collection and three fragrances that posit how even the worst of things can become something beautiful in the end. “In this case, it’s not just stories but a soft whisper that hopes you’re okay, a lasting product you could rest your memories on.”

While it’s not about one particular memory that germinated the creative life force behind The Artisan Collection VII, Kix says that it’s about memories that somehow overwhelm, “unfamiliar feelings that I like going back to.”

He says, “We’re fortunate enough to have the luxury of time to make sure our products are made to the best of our abilities and resources.” No regrets, just love and possibly, a sh*tload of #feels.
