A safe(r) way about it

ONCE IN A BLUE MOON - Paolo F. Belmonte - The Philippine Star

Sex is great. It starts and ends lives. There aren’t too many things in the world with that much power. Today we no longer have to use condoms made of sheep intestines to enjoy the benefits without the baby (or the stuff that rot your body away), but are people really as safe as they think with a rubber pulled over the willy?

Some have the belief that it is a magical suit of penile armor that keeps all the bad things out. It is not. There are things out there you can catch even with the condom on. To be sure, that little piece of rubber goes a long way, but the only full body condom I’ve seen was in a comedy movie. And because you won’t be wearing one of those, get informed. Know what the possibilities are, even if the chances are remote, because they might not be as remote as you think.

The condom could break. The loving partner could be a cheating partner. You might grind your pelvis a little too vigorously over a suspicious-looking sore you didn’t see. And so on.

A little reading is worth every bit of not suffering like Job. A good website on the subject is www.sexsicher.de. It is a German site, but you can click a flag to turn everything into English. I recommend reading through the entire thing, even if it may not be endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church. Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t. Or the devil you wish you knew about beforehand. Or dedicate your life to God and join a monastery or a nunnery. You’ll be safe there.

But sex is great. Would we be around without it? Some guys can manage to live with 50 children (or more) and some women don’t seem to mind giving birth to 14 (not at once), but for many, it is a real question. Get informed. Know what to do, regardless of what you want, and don’t think it won’t happen to you. I know friends and acquaintances who didn’t know, thought sex was great, and are now unintentional mommies and daddies. I wouldn’t say it is necessarily bad if children appear earlier than expected, but they are a big responsibility, and one that people underestimate.

Beware of forgotten pills or sabotaged condoms. Know that trusting a naked dick to do as it’s told and come when you want it to is playing with fire, and my oh my, have people been burned. Know that the possibility of children is always there, to a greater or lesser degree.

A wise man once advised me never to sleep with someone I wouldn’t mind having a child with. At first I thought it was rubbish. Now, years later, it has become my rule of thumb. You never know how things turn out. Sex is a balancing act between life and death, and good luck if you slip. You’ll need it. Because sex is a gamble. But life is a gamble. And it wouldn’t hurt to improve the odds.
