Them jeans

Ralph Mendoza - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Dust off high school yearbooks from the ‘90s and you’ll see dudes clad in Bone Thugs apparel. The jeans were blue and baggy, while the Space Jam T-shirts were loud and loose. Elephant pants gained what seemed like eternal respect, to a point where you would think elephant boxers had actually been invented but never discovered.

Despite the trends, kids back then were lucky to be able to dress at will. Every bro was a free bro. As the casual was eventually replaced with the uniform, we had to wait for college—for the comforts of jeans and the freedom that came along with them.

Now that college life is running its course, we’re running ours. The uniform is past us and we’re armed with options. We’re trying out pants of different colors and washes. We’re trying out tops that we just want to wear regardless of cool factor. At the end of the day, we know that our style is ours and ours only. We’re free to interpret, free to mix it up, free to do our thing.

A 101 on the 501

Levi’s 501 and 511 jeans are all about self-expression and interpretation. As a bolder multi-colored addition to the classics, the new 501 stands out for its lightweight yet durable tailoring—a modern fit for modern bros. Here, model LA Aguinaldo talks about the jeans he wore for the shoot.

YOUNG STAR: The brand is a classic. What memory comes to mind when you think about Levi’s?

LA AGUINALDO: I was cleaning out the closets at home one day and I stumbled upon my dad’s old stuff and rummaged through it. He had all sorts of interesting things, but one thing caught my eye the most—a vintage Levi’s denim jacket. I wore it every day that week. I was ecstatic. Definitely a must-have.

The Levi’s jeans you wore at the shoot were actually the new 501 non-denims in khaki and blue. What strikes you the most about them?

I really loved the fit of the 501s. I feel like I could wear it anywhere I go, from running errands, to castings and parties. Love the versatility.

How would you describe your own style, though?

My personal style is all about fit. If it fits well, it feels well.

Lastly, what can a guy your age do to make wearing 501 jeans interesting?
Take it out to the beach, or wear it during a music festival—you can practically take it anywhere. It can be as versatile as you wish it to be. No limits.
