A stream of irony: Songs hipsters love—ironically or not

Ralph Mendoza - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - It’s interesting to note how the indie-adoring dude can go for the totally mainstream when it comes to his iPod. One minute there’s Baby by Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, followed by Baby by Bieber. Ironic hipster hits: let’s have at it.

Honey by Mariah Carey

Yeah, this song. Yacht vibes from kinky shore to kinky shore. A Mariah classic. The song is accessible and feel-good at the same time no matter what taste in music you have.

Cool With You by Jennifer Love-Hewitt

I remember going to National Bookstore every day just to check her face out on cassette. Hipsters just prefer “the early Jennifer Love-Hewitt” so anything of The Ghost Whisperer-era just won’t cut it.

Hot N Cold by Katy Perry

When this came out, I thought the beat had this confident ‘80s feel to it. It’s one of the most danceable pop songs in the past few years. And that video with Katy swaying with her blue hair? I think I pressed rewind a couple of times, too.

Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen

I never had the smallest urge to disrespect the catchiness of this song and I’m sure music snobs can secretly attest to this. It’s a good dance song Carly Rae predecessors like Madonna would‘ve been proud to have thought of.

Live While We’re Young by One Direction

Crazy, crazy, crazy chorus. I would so mix this in a DJ set just to see how hipsters would rage to it. I know they will rage to this song because somehow hipsters think you’re less cool if you just stick to your The Drums and Cults MP3s.
