THESE AREN'T THE DROIDS YOU'RE LOOKING FOR - Jiggy and Jonty Cruz - The Philippine Star

The second Avengers movie won’t be here until 2015. Thankfully, we’ll get a couple Marvel movies like Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier in between the waiting. But the best thing to come during the long wait is the upcoming Marvel TV show: S.H.I.E.L.D. The new show will mark the return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator and current King of Pop Culture Joss Whedon to television. As die-hard Whedonites, this is quite possibly the best thing ever. S.H.I.E.L.D. will be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and will revolve around the peacekeeping task force that was headed by Nick Fury in The Avengers movie. In short: we’re guessing it’ll be like 24 with superpowers.

We Love Whedon: Smart, clever, and with a face you wouldn’t mind not punching, what more could you ask from TV’s latest savior?

It has been confirmed that the television network ABC has already ordered a pilot episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. and, best of all, the pilot will be written by Joss Whedon himself. There’s still no word if Cobie Smulders will play Maria Hill or if Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury. What we can expect is finally having a real superhero TV show with the clever dialogue and epic storylines Whedon’s known for. Remember Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel? Have you seen Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog? Are you still mad that Fox cancelled Firefly? Then consider S.H.I.E.L.D. Whedon’s comeback to TV dominance and your faith in humanity restored.

How I Met Your Secret Agent: The sooner Ted finds his wife, the sooner Smulders can get back to kicking some ass.

We can only imagine which characters will be on the show. Rumor has been circulating that Agent Phil Coulson played by Clark Gregg may reappear as a revamped Marvel character. Some actually believe that Coulson is set to become the famed Avenger “The Vision.” It’s too early to tell but we expect a couple comic book characters to star in S.H.I.E.L.D. There’s an endless pool of characters in the Marvel Universe they can just put in the TV show. Possibly Luke Cage and Iron Fist can come in as the Heroes For Hire. Maybe even see the return of the evil Hydra to go against S.H.I.E.L.D. We also can’t count out some people from the cast of Buffy to make a cameo or two. The possibilities are endless for what S.H.I.E.L.D. can become.

This is the first TV show Marvel is doing since the Disney acquisition and it’s safe to say a lot is riding on S.H.I.E.L.D. to be a success. Expect S.H.I.E.L.D. to premiere some time in 2013 to 2014. Till then, we can continue praying for Cobie Smulders to reprise her role as Maria Hill, for Felicia Day and Amy Acker to be part of the ensemble cast, and for S.H.I.E.L.D. to become such a massive hit that the world will finally forget Dollhouse ever existed.

The new Buffy? S.H.I.E.L.D. gives us all a new hope for TV.
