FRIES AND FASHION: How to throw the perfect slumber party

ABOUT A BRO - Ralph Mendoza - The Philippine Star

Even as a full-time bro, I still had my share of slumber parties. In fact, the earliest one I’ve ever been to was my freshman class night in high school. It was a sleepover, a night where, ironic as it may sound, nobody really slept. Instead, we would bring our water shotguns and bazookas, load ’em with iced water, and waste everything in sight (except cats). When we grew tired of it, we would order fried chicken, rice, and extra rice, then jam the saddest Eraserheads and Rhett Miller songs while waiting. And if we ever got hungry, which was always the case, we would order again.

No matter how distant that memory is now, the sleepover is actually still alive. It’s your simple weekend option to stay in and catch up with friends. It pleases your guilty craving for a night of teary-eyed laughs and best friendship.

Here, we have four fashion bloggers, girls who share what it’s like to carry out the perfect slumber party from a fun, stylish point of view. Of course, a party without McDonald’s Happy Bundle can’t be a party at all. Burgers, fries, drinks – it’s that customizable, four-meal combo that just works, especially with hungry friends over.

So plan your own slumber party, yes, but make sure you’re well-advised first. Read up, take notes, and keep it fries-filled.

How exactly would you describe the perfect slumber party with you and your friends?

A perfect slumber party will involve my closest and craziest friends, a bunch of good movies, crazy costumes, unlimited food, ‘90s music, a camera, and a few drinks.

Let’s say you volunteer your own place. What activities make the most awesome sleepover?

A wacky card or board game with the craziest consequences for the loser – consequences that might involve a permanent marker and a few shots, perhaps. Also, I always like to bring out my costume bag. Aside from Halloween, sleepovers are always a good time to play dress-up – even if you’re 20 years old already.

What top five movies would you definitely watch together in your room?

One More Chance, High School Musical 1 to 3, and Magic Mike.

As a fashion blogger, how exactly do you organize your closet and room in general?

Pre-fashion blogger and fashion blogger Lexi organize her room the same way. It’s still messy, maybe just a bit bigger now. I share closet with my sisters.

How would you describe your own taste in fashion?

Resourceful.

What makes fashion and style good topics to bond over with your friends?

It’s always changing and in a way it’s very personal. When I’m with my friends, our conversations can go on forever when we start talking about our nene days or what was so in before. It’s nice too see how our styles changed individually and as a group.

Lastly, what are the advantages of having a face-to-face get-together as opposed to anything digital?

There’s nothing better than hearing the boisterous laughter from your best friends’ guts. The way your laughter and jokes will echo around the room and disturb the neighbor five houses down is nothing close to any digital get-together.

How exactly would you describe the perfect slumber party with you and your friends?

Lots of eating, lots of talking, lots of watching, lots of pictures. Oh, and maybe a round or two of Monopoly Deal.

Let’s say you volunteer your own place. What activities make the most awesome sleepover?

I would say a cook-off, Monopoly Deal, and watching episodes of Gossip Girl and 90210 – for the clothes, of course.

What top five movies would you definitely watch together in your room?

10 Things I Hate About You, The Devil Wears Prada, White Chicks, 500 Days of Summer, and maybe Sex and the City for the clothes again – all the girly, cheesy stuff.

As a fashion blogger, how exactly do you organize your closet and room in general?

I put all my work things in my bedroom, (and) all my vanity things in my bathroom. I try to arrange my clothes and accessories by kind: one closet for tops, one for bottoms, one for sweaters, one for shoes, two racks and drawers for accessories, another rack and cabinet for my bags. I used to arrange them by color too when I was younger. But now I’m just too busy so the most OC setup I could do is sort them by kind.

How would you describe your own taste in fashion?

I like mixing and matching updated classics with bohemian items. I love textures, bold colors and prints. Generally, I think my style is very polished-creative.

What makes fashion and style good topics to bond over with your friends?

I guess it’s simply because we all have a common interest in it. We’ll probably be looking through various fashion websites while we’re at it.

Lastly, what are the advantages of having a face-to-face get-together as opposed to anything digital?

I get more out of the friendship when we bond in person. Because, for me, it’s not just about socializing. Friendship is most importantly about companionship. And I think there’s no better way to experience that than actually being with the people you dearly call friends.

How exactly would you describe the perfect slumber party with you and your friends?

All of my friends tease me for being such a lola (grandmother). I love the usual exchange of stories and “cheesmax” with the girls with a bit of card and drinking games.

Let’s say you volunteer your own place. What activities make the most awesome sleepover?

The games Never Have I Ever & Cardinal. Never fails to make everyone perky. (Laughs)

What top five movies would you definitely watch together in your room?

Project X, 50 First Dates, Bridesmaids, and The Hangover 1 and 2.

As a fashion blogger, how exactly do you organize your closet and room in general?

For the clothes and shoes, they are arranged by color. I also love storing items in boxes and cans. For sponsored items, they are arranged according to brand so that I won’t forget to credit them once I wear and post them on my blog.

How would you describe your own taste in fashion?

It’s unpredictable but I’d like to believe it’s versatile. It’s always best to experiment and constantly challenge yourself.

What makes fashion and style good topics to bond over with your friends?

You get to learn about secret shopping places and the mix of opinions can really push you to think outside the box. I’m blessed to be surrounded by such creative and stylish friends.

Lastly, what are the advantages of having a face-to-face get-together as opposed to anything digital?

The bonding is really different when we’re all together. All of us are lazy texters (laughs) but when we all see each other, we chat like there’s no tomorrow and we always end up having spontaneous trips.

How exactly would you describe the perfect slumber party with you and your friends?

Awesome company, good food, and interesting movies.

Let’s say you volunteer your own place. What activities make the most awesome sleepover?

Dress up and pretend to have a photo shoot. My friends and I used to do this a lot back in high school. It was crazy yet super fun.

What top five movies would you definitely watch together in your room?

Mean Girls, Clueless, The Vow, Bride Wars, and The Devil Wears Prada.

As a fashion blogger, how exactly do you organize your closet and room in general?

I organize my clothes and shoes by color so it won’t be hard to choose when I create my outfits. I’m very OC so room organization is never a problem.

How would you describe your own taste in fashion?

I prefer classic pieces over trendy ones. I used to follow trends religiously but now, I learned to tone it down a bit.

What makes fashion and style good topics to bond over with your friends?

My friends and I usually BBM or text one another whenever we need style advice like, “Hi is this outfit okay?” or “I don’t know what shoes I’m gonna wear with this outfit.” Shopping is a great way to bond with your friends. They will honestly tell you if it’s worth buying or if the item really suits you.

Lastly, what are the advantages of having a face-to-face get-together as opposed to anything digital?

Everything’s better when done face-to-face. I’m not against digital communication but I’m not the type of person who would text with my friends 24/7. Emotions are blocked off in a text (because) emoticons just don’t suffice, and sometimes people misinterpret what you say through text because they can’t hear your tone or see your facial expressions.
