Streetwear shelter
MANILA, Philippines - Bunker’s third anniversary felt every bit the underground event—mainly because it was held underground, at the basement of Ronac Art Center along Ortigas Avenue.
Last Saturday, Nov. 5, free-flowing beer on tap and live music from Mike’s Apartment (soul-funk outfit with Wendell Garcia on the drums), and Sell Our Door (shy electro from the south), and Bee Eyes (pogi punk) kept people in high, sweaty spirits within the L-shaped storage room behind Bunker. As punk rock-rooted Obey Clothing’s flagship store in Manila, Bunker has housed everything streetwear since ‘08, from Obey to brands like Super, Doc Martens, Vans, Nike, Supreme, and Porter.
Spotted inside Bunker that night were the likes of Georgina Wilson, Carlos Concepcion, Ketchup Eusebio, and of course, Borgy Manotoc himself, who was careful not to over-hype his store. “We just try to get a good product out there,” says owner Borgy Manotoc, who tapped Bunker store manager/Bee Eyes vocalist Julius Valledor to design an exclusive tee with Obey.
The new Bunker x Obey shirt, designed by Julius Valledor.“We just wanted to show something real,” admits Valledor. “We fell in love with this image of the riot police beating the shit out of activists for speaking their minds so we decided to put it on a shirt.”
Aside from the Bunker x Obey collab, a Bunker Medals jacket was also released, coinciding with a one-day-only sale that included select Obey Shirts at 500 PHP and other rare items.
Bunker’s third, people. Who knows what kind of mayhem they’ll pull off the fourth time around?
