9. Offbeat music finds an outlet
MANILA, Philippines - Number Line Records is a new independent record label dedicated to the free distribution of work by Filipino artists. It’s also a collective that tries to challenge the limits set by conventional and commercial outlets on what kinds of local music become accessible and popular.
The compilation introduces listeners to the label’s relatively unknown line-up, which includes: indie pop and indie rock acts Outerhope, Multo, Slow Hello and the Treblinka Love Scene; surf-noise artist Manuel Nicolas Alvero; post rock and shoegaze-inspired project Love in Athens; beat-haze producer Similar Objects; experimental acts Plant a Tree and Big Hat Gang; and electronic artists Modulogeek and Tarsius.
The compilation is a pretty diverse listen. There are tracks on it that are infectious and familiar, and some that might be more challenging and foreign. Either way, we hope the compilation allows people to discover artists they haven’t had a chance to hear and appreciate a wider range of locally produced music.
The compilation is available as a free download at www.number linerecords.com. Limited-edition physical copies featuring artwork by Bea Camacho, Mariano Ching, Dex Fernandez, Marcushiro Nada, and Tof Zapanta will also be given out to the first 50 people at the Number Line Records launch today, May 6, at Saguijo in Makati.
