LSP to host international confab of linguists
MANILA, Philippines - The Linguistic Society of the Philippines (LSP) will host the 15th Conference of the International Association for World Englishes (IAWE) on Oct. 22-24, 2009 at Parklane International Hotel in Cebu City. Past IAWE conferences were held in the US, Singapore, South Africa, Japan, Germany and Hong Kong.
The annual conference is a forum that promotes the exchange of ideas among linguists, applied linguists, sociolinguists, writers, scholars and educators on the philosophy of World Englishes and issues of convergence and diversity specifically in language, literature and pedagogy.
This year’s conference theme is “Connecting Cultures through World Englishes: Convergence and Diversity in Language, Literature, and Pedagogy.” The conference will cover a wide range of topics in education, government, industry and media. Keynote speakers are Prof. Eyamba Bokamba (University of Illinois at Urbana, Champaign), Prof. Yasukata Yano (Waseda University, Tokyo) and Prof. Danilo Dayag (De La Salle University, Manila).
The local organizing committee for this conference is composed of Dr. Danilo Dayag, Dr. Shirley Dita, Dr. Rochelle Lucas and Dr. Eden Flores (all from De La Salle University, Manila), Profs. Ana Maria Gloria Ward and Camilla Vizconde (University of Santo Tomas), Dr. Isabel Pefianco Martin and Dr. Carol A. Nuñez (Ateneo de Manila University), Dr. Milagros Laurel (University of the Philippines, Diliman), Dr. Nanette Montealegre (Philippine Normal University) and Glenn Stallsmith (Summer Institute of Linguistics, Philippines). Dr. Marilu Rañosa-Madrunio of the University of Santo Tomas is this year’s IAWE conference director. They are assisted by the faculty and students of the University of the Philippines, Cebu.
