Brand new you
YStyle’s always been a sucker for makeovers. From ETC show Ambushed Makeover’s rushed, sometimes less-than-stellar do-overs to truly decadent ones like the life-transforming makeovers on Oprah, anything that involves a hapless case of fashion-gone-bad and overzealous stylists never fails to entertain.
We’ve got two cases of girls who need a little kick in the wardrobe department. With stylist Mela de Luna helming the makeover project, these girls are bound to look a million times better. See for yourself.
Name: Sam Nadela
Why we chose her: Sixteen-year-old Sam didn’t know she was part of YStyle’s new year makeover contest until she won. Weeks before we announced the winners, her self-confessed “makeover-mad” mom, Rona Nadela, penned us a sweet note, saying: “For the new year, instead of making resolutions about myself I resolve to give more time to my daughter and help her develop self-confidence, beginning with her appearance. A new look will prepare her as she says goodbye this year to high school and hello to college life.” If only all moms were as savvy — and sweet — as Sam’s!
Out with the old: Sam’s style was strictly tween — the pink tee and the plain jeans say it all — and the stylist’s job was to up the ante on Sam’s style. “She’s going to college,” says Mela as she views Sam’s potential wardrobe on racks of teen-friendly clothing at SM, “and she won’t be wearing a uniform anymore. Now she can break out of the mold and figure out her personal style.”
Our recommendation: Colored jeans add flavor and keep the look young. Floral dresses add a ladylike element to a wardrobe while keeping things fresh.
The results: “Samantha is a graduating high school senior, a little young homebody who wants the sophistication and confidence of her older classmates,” Sam’s mom claimed in her first note. With a brand-spanking-new wardrobe in her arsenal, her older classmates won’t be able to keep up with her.
Beauty note
With Sam’s fair skin and doe eyes, makeup artist Sharon decided to play to Sam’s strengths by using Laura Mercier’s Powder Foundation no. 5 and then topping it off with Secret Brightening Powder for a luminous finish. Winter Bloom blush and Italian Summer lipstick gives her an all-natural, rosy-cheeked glow. Hairstylist Bernard of Razzle Dazzle gave Sam flirty bangs and some color, livening up her black hair with a rich chestnut.
Name: Irish Dizon
Why we chose her: “I need to look good (since) I represent the very few youth in the government who are trying to change the perception that government service is only for the mediocre,” she pleaded in a note to YStyle when we first posted news of a makeover.
“As a communications and broadcast assistant at the office of the press secretary in Malacañang, I meet dignitaries, political figures, and media personalities on a weekly basis.”
Out with the old: Ill-fitting jeans and boring polo shirts made for her weekend wardrobe, while her office ensembles left much to be desired. “I’m not very good at picking stuff out,” Irish exclaims when we make the rounds at SM with stylist Mela de Luna. “I tend to go towards the basic.”
Our recommendation: “You don’t need to surrender to boring basics,” claims stylist Mela, “in order to get the job done.” Working with Irish’s curvy figure was a snap. Highlighting her hourglass figure through sexy yet work-appropriate ensembles consisted of pulling her out of unflattering hip-hugging silhouettes and turning her on to high-waist pencil skirts that skim her waist and hips while elongating her figure.
The results: “Oh, you should hear my elegant best friend rant about my utter lack of fasyown sense,” Irish wrote in her note. Her friend won’t have much to say once she spots photos of Irish looking red-hot in her new wardrobe.
Beauty note
With luscious lips like Irish’s, it doesn’t take much to look the part of a stylish working woman. Makeup artist Sharon used Laura Mercier’s stick gloss palette in Brown Sugar and Baked Earth on Irish’s lips, which sets off her skin tone, and finishes her look with a dash of Blushing Apple blush across her cheekbones. Hairstylist Bernard gave Irish a sharp shoulder-length ’do, taking off lank layers and giving her face-framing wisps that flattered her jawline.
