The great weight
I’ve been called anorexic when I’m slim, and pregnant when I get a tad bit rotund. There’s no winning in the weighing game. Almost all my life, I have been at odds with how my body looked. When I was younger I was so skinny that I could not even wear sleeveless shirts and shorts without raising red flags. Taking my emaciated frame for granted I ate the trashiest things and soon its effects appeared on my belly and, later, an ungainly triple chin perched on my skeletal body.
That’s when the obsession began. I went through months eating just plain toast and juice. Then I moved on to more complicated affairs such as weighing and measuring my food with a portable scale, scraping toppings off pizza so I could have a carbless feast and guzzling diet soda for energy. Looking back I could not believe the abuse I put my young and fatigued body through.
It took years before I made peace with pasta and found a love for salmon. Moderation became my friend and after years of religiously hitting the gym and pampering my body with some Gattaca-esque treatments I don’t have that spooky feeling anymore when I look in the mirror.
Like with every insecurity, age softens its rage and maturity puts its absurdity in perspective. I eat when I’m hungry. Work out even if I feel lazy. Even stopped drinking alcohol (five months coming!) to keep my innards happy. The ultimate reward for my fastidious kindness to my body is being able to buy clothes that fit.
Of course, body maintenance should not be a boring pump and iron affair. With all the innovative outlets available, losing weight can be an adventure without the trauma. Of course, keep your plate sensibly decorated with healthy food while you’re at it.
