Wave goodbye to stubborn arm fat

- Yvette Tan -

There are those special people who inherit houses and trust funds from their parents.  Unfortunately, what most of us get from our folks are family heirlooms like saggy arms and inner thighs, which, like certain relatives, you have no choice but to live with for the rest of your life.

Any veteran of non-invasive fat reduction procedures will tell you that while it is relatively easy to target spots like the thighs and tummy, it is virtually impossible to zap the fat located in two of our body’s most stubborn fat-prone areas: the upper arms (aka batwings — not the kind Batman would be proud of), the bra line and inner thighs.  For some people, these areas are the last holdouts of unwanted fat and no amount of exercise, diet or prayer will make them go away.

Until now.

Marie France, one of the pioneers of safe and gradual weight loss in the country, recently introduced the SlenderArm TriPollar, a non-invasive fat reduction treatment that (gasp!) targets formerly impossible to reach areas like — yes, I can’t stress this enough — batwing arms and inner thighs.   “Before TriPollar, there was no good solution for the arms or thighs because of the small area. It’s very difficult to treat,” says Oded Rose, one of the world’s foremost experts in TriPollar treatment.

Immediate results

“The SlenderArm TriPollar tightens skin, reduces the circumference of the arm or thigh and makes it firm and tight.  So for arms, thighs and bra lines, it’s the only solution,” he adds, “And the best part is it’s painless and you get immediate results.”

Each treatment takes about 45 minutes, and should be done once a week for 10 weeks to get the full effect and maximum results, though one can see results after just one treatment.

“We always do in-house studies before we buy a machine,” Marie France’s own Dr. Ariel Torres explains. “I would treat one arm before the other, then have the patient wiggle them both so they could see the immediate effect for themselves.”

One can expect centimeter loss after each treatment, which all adds up to a cumulative effect of inches lost after the 10 weeks of treatment.  “It depends on how loose your connective tissue is,” Dr. Torres says. “Meaning, the more saggy your skin is, the greater your chance for centimeter loss.”  In some cases, one treatment is enough to dissolve fatty nodules under the skin.

Getting a SlenderArm TriPollar treatment is like getting a deep massage: three electrodes that emit specially designed tri-polar  radio frequency are placed against your skin to heat collagen fibers under the skin. The fibers contract when heated, thus pulling the skin together.

“The electrodes focus energy in a very tight way, unlike older technology which can’t do that.  Because of this, TriPollar can work with relatively small surface areas. We use much less energy than older technologies,” Oded explains. “Because TriPollar uses a lower amount of energy, it’s not painful and it’s very focused, which means it’s very effective. This is why you see results immediately.”

The electrodes also trigger fibroblasts, the cells that produce collagen, to create more collagen under the skin.  “When you do the treatment 10 times, you produce enough collagen to keep the skin tight and firm,” Oded says. “At the same time, the heat goes deep, working in the fat layer underneath the skin, making the fat cells smaller.”

Multitasking technology

In short, the SlenderArm TriPollar does three things: it makes skin tighter, stimulates collagen production and decreases the size of fat cells — the trifecta of upper arm fat reduction.  It may even work on cellulite and dimply skin.  “We can’t say that it has a direct effect on cellulite,” Dr. Torres says. “But it does work on the deep fat cells that are responsible for cellulite.  So you’re targeting the cause, which is overloaded — my word — fatty tissue, and not the effect, which is cellulite.”

In the old days, people who lost a huge amount of weight — either through diet and exercise or liposuction — had to contend with the sagging skin left under their arms.  TriPollar actually complements these weight loss procedures.  “This is not a replacement for liposuction, it’s actually complementary,” Oded says. “If you have a lot of fat that you want to get a rid of very quickly, first of all, we recommend diet and exercise, which is a much better way to do it.  If you do TriPollar, it will help reduce the fatty areas and make it smaller.  It’s also complementary to liposuction because an obese person who has undergone liposuction will have a huge amount of skin left.  If you do TriPollar, you will make your skin tighter.  A lot of plastic surgeons who do liposuctions use TriPollar to complement their operations.”

“A lot of our clients have been clamoring for a treatment that targets the upper arms and inner thighs,” Dr. Torres laughs. “And now we can give it to them.  Finally, there’s a solution for something that couldn’t be done before.”

“It’s really the first technology that targets fat reduction in specific areas that haven’t been addressed before,” Oded adds. “It gives immediate results and no pain.”

The TriPollar technology is fairly new.  “Worldwide, (it’s been out for) probably less than 18 months,” Oded says. “In the Philippines, (it’s been) just a few months.  It’s very, very new.”

It works!  It works!

Never one to shy away from experimentation for the sake of my writing, I subjected myself to a TriPollar session.  First, the circumference of my arms was measured (I decline to print the actual measurements for reasons of obscenity).   I was asked to drink a glass of water before the treatment, because coming in contact with a high amount of energy could dehydrate my body.  Then came the fun part.

I was asked to expose my upper arms (which have been jiggly since I was two).  A rod with three nodules sticking out was placed on my skin and moved around on my fatty bits. It felt wonderful, as if I was being massaged inside my skin.  There was some heat but it was soothing, the kind of heat that you could fall asleep to (and many people have!).

After both my arms had been treated, I was given another glass of water, then my arms were measured again.  I had lost one centimeter on my left arm and .5 centimeter on my right.  And my arms did feel tighter.  One cm may not sound like a lot in print, but in reality, it made me want to rip my sleeves off and show the world my now one-cm-thinner arms.

So now, there’s no reason to live with stubborn fat you can’t get rid of.  Maybe they’ll invent something that works on unwanted relatives next.
