Color me bad
Take cover for summer in one of the brightest trends this year: colored denim. The likes of Rachel Bilson, Sienna Miller, Kate Moss and Lindsay Lohan have made the colorful pants a wardrobe staple, flashing the paparazzi with cerulean, forest green, cranberry, canary and washed-out purple. Internet celebs like Cory Kennedy, who made a name for herself as the ingenue of Cobra Snake, has been known to hit the clubs in acid-washed denim in mauve or magenta. Even Gretchen Barretto’s a fan (not that I asked her; I spotted the celeb partying it up in cyan jeans at the Rudy Fernandez bash on some showbiz program).
Fashion-forward denim labels have been re-engineering this ’80s classic, a throwback to Grease and other retro fare, in increments, starting with skinny jeans in neon and moving on to primary colors once the trend hit the streets. Ksubi, Rock & Republic, Topshop and Uniqlo are just a few of the brands to join the chromic fray.
Cheaper — but just as cute — alternatives can be found at SM (which, in all seriousness, happens to be my mecca). Hollywood Jeans (which cost about P600), Jag (P900) and Freego (P850) make experimenting with color a fun — and inexpensive — endeavor. With variations on the skinny jean, some tapered and embellished with a zipper, others tight on the hips and a little loose on the calf, there are options for every body type, and with muted styles on display, there is little to worry about when it comes to incorporating the trendy piece into your wardrobe.
For the more adventurous, mix it up with florals and plaid. Or keep it simple on top with bold black or crisp white. Make the most of this day-glo denim. It’s not every day you get to beat the summer blues with bright bold hues.
