Feeling the blues

Yves Saint Laurent once said, “I wish I had invented blue jeans, they have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity — all I hope for in my clothes.” 

Gosh, I wish I had invented blue jeans: I’d be a gazillionaire right now. 

A pair of great jeans is probably the most indispensable piece of clothing in a modern man’s wardrobe. They are just the most versatile thing ever. You can wear jeans for almost any occasion — be it casual with a tee or dressy with a cool shirt and a slick blazer.  They’re very practical since they hardly need to be washed nor ironed. They’re also very utilitarian since you can wear them for any activity.

To invest in a pair that’s just perfect for you, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Fit

Jeans should be comfortable lest your intention is to show off that package à la John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever — ouch. Make sure the legs, crotch and waist areas are not too tight. Remember that jeans usually shrink so allow for a bit of allowance in those areas, including the length. Look at your behind: the fit should be snug enough to make your bottom look good.

Finish

The most versatile finish is that of classic blue jeans. They just go with everything. Then there are the faded or acid-wash ones that make for a good contrast with a dark top. Darker hues are naturally more slimming. There is also the dirty denim finish which has a rust-colored or brownish look. These look good when worn with a more subdued top.

Occasion

It’s good to have at least two pairs of great jeans in your wardrobe.  One for more casual occasions, perhaps faded ones with a looser fit; these are great to wear during the day or for traveling. The other should be a pair of classic blue or dark jeans. The fit should be more tailored to your body type. These can usually be worn for work if the environment allows it. They also look great for semiformal occasions when worn with a nice dress shirt or with a shirt and jacket.
