In the realm of innovative technology, there is no doubt that Smart always comes up with the first — just like Smart Money or the 3G network. Now comes Mobile Eye. Even before its existence was confirmed just a few weeks ago, this device has dominated the gadget gossip mill. (Well, it was even used by a TV network for doing remote broadcasts during the elections.)

Imagine a 3G-security camera with just the shape of Marvin’s head from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. While you are vacationing around the country, you can just call the device to see and hear what is going on at home or even check up on your business from a distance.

ÅgMobile Eye is another first from Smart and another first in the Philippines,Åh says Smart Communications senior product manager for 3G new business Lisette Cipriano. ÅgThis video call-in 3G device provides Smart subscribers a digital life solution to keep an eye on just about anything from anywhere like their family or property.Åh

If you are wondering how it actually works, it is very simple. All you need is a 3G handset subscribed to a Smart line. Then, purchase the Mobile Eye from the Smart Wireless Center. The device includes a Smart Buddy SIM pack for P9,595. Just video-call the Mobile Eye and enter the PIN code. Communicating with your loved ones from the other end has never been this easy.

Smart’s revolutionary Mobile Eye, white-colored bubble-type helmet with speakers, is such a high-tech ensemble. Perhaps the greatest thing about it is that you can control the camera remotely with the 3G-handset. Patented features run the gamut including the adjustable lens angle, night mode, brightness adjustment and even PIN code protection for effective one-way or two-way communication.

ÅgYou can control the camera of the Mobile Eye with keypad numbers two, four, six and eight,Åh says JP Enriquez, Smart Communications product officer for 3G new business. ÅgUnlike web cams, the Mobile Eye has zoom-in and zoom-out functionality and allows the user to pan the camera left, right, up or down.Åh

Another cool thing Smart launched is the Decode. Currently popular in Japan and Korea, this tool simplifies the act of entering complex codes on a mobile phone. Developed by an American company called Nextcode, Smart chose this technology because it is very flexible and fit for camera phones. Similar to bar codes, Smart’s mcodes (mobile codes) provide a series of system-generated squares, which form a code containing information found in newspapers, magazines, product labels, signs, web banner ads, business cards and even scratch cards.

ÅgDecode is a tool that simplifies the act of entering complex codes on a mobile phone. It allows camera phones to scan, take a picture of the printed codes that represent information,Åh says Dexter Chan, Smart Communications senior product officer for gaming and entertainment.

Since its launch during Close Up’s Lovapalooza, this technology was also used in Binibing Pilipinas for the texter’s choice award. Plus, most Smart employees are also using this for mobile payment in their office canteen like a wallet-free service.

In order for the decoding session to begin, download the Decode application from the Smart wapsite, http://decode.smart.com.ph or through SMS by texting DECODE to 7888 and install it on your mobile phone for a big hurrah.

This new mobile service allows users to say good-bye to keying in correct keywords to download a whole lot of information like the coolest ring tones and MMS wallpapers of sexy girls like Lindsay Lohan or Dita Von Teese. With Decode running on the mobile phone, all you need now is to position the camera with the mcode in the center of the screen, shoot and then send. Decode will trigger the transaction in a flash.

Expect Decode to be part of a social networking mania as well. Soon you will be able to create your own codes and put them on T-shirts so people can take a picture of your code to know your personality for those dating musts.

In the end, we all want the same things — convergence, innovation and a simpler way of getting information with our mobile phones, which is definitely a smart thing to do.
