Bless the beach and the children

RAVIN’ FACTS - RAVIN’ FACTS By Jennifer Ong -
I don’t really know if love can move mountains. But I have seen how it can bring nearly 300 people ashore. Yes, love came rushing in one bright and sunny morning in Puerto Galera. It swept through the shores and even poured right out into the sea. There was love, so much love, for the beach and for Nestea.

Yes, to paraphrase the title of a famous song by the Carpenters, "Bless the beach and the children."

Nestea, hailed as the drink of summer, returns to some of the Philippines’ favorite beaches for the start of Nestea Beach 2007. And this time around, they’re not just bringing in some heart-stopping beach volley action, they’re showing some love, too, by cleaning up these beloved shores.

"Love the Beach" is what Nestea is telling everyone in its 11th year of celebrating the goodness of summer. It is a campaign aimed at helping keep the beaches throughout the country clean.

The campaign is a realization of Nestea’s two-year vision. As Nestlé’s AVP and Nestea’s consumer marketing manager Tina Samaco explains, "We have always wanted to do some sort of a beach campaign, but physically, we couldn’t do it yet."

Well, this time, they did it, with a little help from a dear old friend. The Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) has always been one of Nestea’s good friends. As you might have guessed, they love the beach, too. In fact, aside from its various poverty alleviation programs, PBSP also holds a coastal rehabilitation program, which is exactly what Nestea is supporting now.

Nestea’s "Love the Beach" began on the shores of Puerto Galera last March 10. Puerto Galera in Mindoro Oriental is known for clear blue waters, beautiful coral, dive sites and, of course, beaches. For sometime now, this place has also been doing its own beach cleanup every 26th of the month. But they’re certainly grateful to Nestea, PBSP, and all the volunteers for their help.

The beach cleanup started at sunrise. Close to 300 volunteers, composed of students and teachers, arrived at the shores early on. They came from the Computer Learning Center of Calapan-Institute of Computer Arts and Technology, Prince of Peace College, Batangas State University and the Filipino Academy of Scientific Trades.

After registration and distribution of cleanup supplies, everyone was set to go. They picked up pieces of trash along the shoreline and even raked through the sand. Meanwhile, a group of divers was ready to get into the swim of things. Led by Brad Turvey and Nancy Castiglione, they dove 15 to 20 feet down to collect all the trash hidden underwater. In no time, their work was done. It was a clean sweep for both groups.

Gazing out upon a better, cleaner Puerto Galera afterward, everyone enjoyed a sumptuous lunch and some refreshing Nestea Iced Tea.

If you missed this one, the Nestea "Love the Beach" campaign will make its way to Boracay on April 22. And Nestea’s got another tea-tillating surprise for all Nestea lovers: buy your favorite Nestea drink now and get a chance to win a trip for four to Hawaii with $3,000 pocket money or three consolation prizes of trips for two to Boracay.

So as you can see, enjoying summer is really no sweat. Just love the beach, join the cleanup, and drink more Nestea!
