Survivor Shu-Nami-Moto!

"It’s Survivor Shu-Nami-Moto Year 5!" quipped one participant at the annual Shu-Nami-Moto weekend celebrations at Diniwid Beach, Boracay, likening it to the famous reality TV show. Only, in this case, the battle was more about making sure you were adept with your party and dress-up skills or else you were not going to last.
Weekend hostess and darling friend, Shu Uemera’s Tina Tinio, pointed out to me that, from the original batch of participants five years ago, it was only buddy Tim Yap and myself who have attended all five events.
I noticed five points for this year’s revelries, a few of which might help serve as guidelines for those of you attending next year  that is, if you survived the last one.
1. Get Ahead
Get to Nami as early as possible. With SEAir’s fleet of Dornier aircrafts, you can get to the island in a speedy 35 minutes. The airline flies at least 20 times a day so you have a lot of choices to fit your busy schedule.
Being early means getting more choices. Though all of Nami’s 15 rooms are very nice  standard rooms have amazing views of the bay with balconies that each have a Jacuzzi, complimentary iPod speakers for use during your stay and personal "Nami butlers"  it’s always great to choose your own personal layout. It’s resort boutique-style at Nami so no two rooms are the same; being given the luxury of choosing your own is a matter of personal taste that anyone would welcome.
Arriving ahead also lets you prepare ahead for the next couple of days of resort debauchery.
2. Your choice: overweight or underdressed.
With hostess Tina Tinio dishing out truly unique themes for the parties, you had better pack well for the activities. Forget the usual 10-kilo limit  I heard one guest went well over 30 kilos! A friend of mine says packing light is so ‘90s; overpacking is more 21st century.
The first night saw the cast of characters assembled at the resort’s seaside sundeck in Fantasy Island-inspired outfits. It was ‘80s over-the-top glam galore for a lot of the guests. Booze from Premiere Wines and Spirits kept us well lubricated for all the night’s grooving and schmoozing.
Day two had us aboard the M/S Vianelle Trimaran yacht for sunset sailing on our Love Boat-themed cruise. Motorola’s Mari Litonjua, who also celebrated his birthday that weekend, made sure our champagne flutes were always topped up with Moet & Chandon. Tunes from The Love Boat era had a few of us swaying in the sunset. Nami’s excellent service team led by GM Irene Kramer was on deck to make sure that our every whim was attended to.
This was my third voyage on the Trimaran ever since my friend Joel Ong had the genius of making this yacht available for hire a couple of months back. The M/S Vianelle’s wide deck is perfect for celebrating those special parties. Nami will be more than happy to arrange this.
The festivities did not end as we docked back on Diniwid’s shore and continued to party well into the night on the sundeck. DJ Stephen Ku made sure we had the best tunes.
3. Survivor of the fittest
The fifth anniversary also became the test of the fittest or at least the trying-to-be-fit. I always try to put an extra effort into my workout regimen before coming to Nami ‘cause I know I’m going to binge. How can you not with the stream of delicious Nami dishes that just kept flowing out of the kitchen? I will always love Nami’s famous beef salpicao, spanakopitas and mushroom tarts. Haagen Dazs also expanded our smiles and waistlines with their delicious ice cream distributed during the love boat dinner.
Being fit will also help in carrying that well-stocked gift bag that was given to each guest (okay, our Namis did all the carrying). Each bag had goodies from Shu Uemura, Kerastase and Giorgio Armani and a pair of slippers from Havaianas. We were also given GCs to shop at Nami’s Manami boutique and browse for fab stuff from Minx by Charina Sarte, Cocotini, Team Manila, Havaianas, Twinkle, Cole Vintage and Nami originals.
4. Big surprises come in glass bottles
One of the biggest highlights of the weekend happened during The Love Boat cruise when the staff started tossing out glass bottles that were corked with rolled papers inside. We all had to literally fish them out of the ocean. Inside were gift certificates for the latest Motorola phones. Mari made sure that each guest received one free! I got the fantastic blue KRAZR phone!
5. Lex says, "The only rule of the weekend is that there are no rules."
I remember Nami’s Lex Ledesma uttering this rule a few years back. It’s practically been observed as the mandate of the weekend celebrations and set the relaxed tone that everyone loves about the Nami anniversary parties. Whether you choose to wake up early and savor the sun at the sundeck or party all night long  it’s all up to you at Nami.
