It’s back to the daily grind and – if you’re lucky – the daily shopping sprees with Mom to stock up on all the necessary supplies for school. That could mean anything from books and notebooks to a wardrobe update. For those who aren’t blessed with such benevolent parents, a little DIY style could breathe new life into a couple of old things.

Accessories designer Irene Pineda demonstrates a couple of easy fix ideas to add a little sparkle to that utilitarian ID strap and book bag. A little string and a lot of resourcefulness can go a long way.

Materials:

Mixed media materials like pendants, charms or old earrings, ribbon or string and scissors

To do:

Combine a mix of old charms or toys that represent the things you like. Anything works here: some flower cutouts, leftover pearls from a bracelet, or a bunch of pendants from a necklace.

Tie them all together using leather cord, ribbon or string.

Clip on your ID to the finished necklace. Match it with some leftover pendants and attach to your bag.

Prepare for the rest of the class to fall at your feet and compliment your style.
