Young Star

Wanna rock to health?

-
It was one hot evening a few weeks ago when I went to catch the Nike Rockstar Workout at the Tent in Fort Bonifacio.

Workout like a rockstar? Yeah, right.

Dancing has never been my thing. And, for as long as I have been into fitness, I have seen all sorts of cardio workouts. Tried ‘em, too. That’s the sign of a real workout enthusiast – one who is willing to give any routine a try, no matter how awkward they might seem.

Young they were and excited, too.

The Tent was set up like a huge rock concert hall (I have never been to a rock concert but that is what I was told). Workout enthusiasts came in little groups, each group garbed in their hip-hop best. Ahhh, and that’s the best thing about this new workout from Nike – the outfits let you be you. No need for skimpy, body-hugging gear, wear the loose, rockstar garb and in you will be.

That’s what I like about the new Nike generation, it does not matter what age you are, what matters is that you want to move, lose some weight and get fit in the process.

There were more than 400 women and some men, too, who moved and grooved to soulful hiphop tunes at the Nike Rockstar Workout. This is the latest fitness dance experience from Nike which was launched in more than 35 Fitness First gyms across Southeast Asia in February, including 11 Fitness First gyms here in the Philippines.

The three-hour event saw instructors of Fitness First lead the huge workout group through the Nike Rockstar Workout-Hip-Hop routine, a total body workout fusing the perfect blend of athleticism and urban dance that features the hottest new hip-hop flavor and attitude to the routine.

The Rockstar Workout-Hip-Hop was created for Nike by MTV and Emmy Award-nominated celebrity director/choreographer Jamie King. King has collaborated with some of the industry’s top artist including Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Prince, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Ricky Martin, Janet Jackson, Pink and Shakira.

"Dance is my passion, so I’m thrilled that Nike continues to embrace dance as a fitness trend wit its latest collection and the Nike Rockstar Workout-Hip-Hop," said Jamie King. "Collaborating on Rihanna’s music video to include Nike Rockstar Workout-Hip-Hop moves truly makes this workout rockstar."

To complete the Rockstar energy, Nike launched a dance-inspired footwear and apparel collection that was designed for quick, high-energy dance workouts. In fact, the apparel was worn by artist Rihanna and her dancers throughout her latest single, SOS, a music video created for the Nike Rockstar Workout-Hip-hop Music video on nikewomen.com.ph.

The apparel line features technology that provides comfort for optimum performance even during high-energy moves. This apparel line features tank tops, woven pants, capris, diva shrugs and more. The footwear range includes the Nike Shox Ballo and the Nike Zoom Danzante.

"Nike knows that sports goes beyond the traditional courts and playing fields. In particular, the area of women’s fitness has focused on the athleticism of dance and this has been complemented by new product and workout content," said Ariel Fermin, Nike Philippines country manager. "Nike continues to innovate fitness dance with its unique collaboration with dance and music artists such as Rihanna and Jamie King, with exciting executions such as the Nike Rockstar Workout music videos as end products," added Fermin.

Indeed. The music was loud and the moves were too rock star for me to groove to. But, hey, the kids were all heated up and they could really move.

If there is one thing that I have learned in life, the fitness life, that is, it is workout and let others workout their way. Burning calories, eating right and staying fit are an individual thing. Just make sure that you get out and do it. Dress right, it will make all the difference. Stay cool with Nike. Shoes, bags, gym hip-hop wear, they got it. Why, I never realized that dressing like a rockstar is so much fun.

"The Nike Rockstar Workout gave women and the men, too, a great workout and the unique opportunity to learn and experience a totally novel way of mixing music, dance, and fitness," said Fermin.
