Last season was a coterie of clothes inked in shades as dark as Edgar Allan Poes poetry. Although this season looks forward to more optimistic tones, it still holds firm on austere aesthetics and a new incarnation of minimalism. Barely there accessories and simple silhouettes are all pretty but unfortunately lacking. So whats a modern material girl to do?
Although I have toned down my look just a notch, I cant help but feel naked. Im all about excess and extravagance. I want my outfits to be all earrings, necklaces and cuffs like a kid playing dress up with moms clothes. So how can one pile it on without looking like a train wreck from The Bonfire of the Vanities era? Here are some tips to have your cake and it eat it too.
1. Pile on different necklaces although limit it to the very most at four. I like mixing leather chains with pearls and some semi-precious chokers in different lengths.
2. Wear three different cocktail rings, one on each hand and the third on the thumb. It looks so silly that its fabulous!
3. Wear opulent earrings and necklaces with extreme caution. The mindset is to look exotic not insecure.
4. With clothes, try layering. Putting one diaphanous piece over another adds an unexpected edge and sexiness to any look.
5. Let a simple tank and jeans be your base and layer with richer pieces like a velvet wrap or a sparkly top.
6. Choose sparkly shoes that makes a statement and make it go together with your rather opinionated outfit.
7. Work with this seasons simple line, and add texture whether with a ruffled collar or a geometric coat.
8. If you plan to play it rich, dont scrimp on the elements. Think pearls, rhinestones and semi-precious beads in contrasting colors.
9. Although monochromatic can also be lovely, pair, for example, a lavender dress with amethyst beads and a rich violet pump. Just make sure its not all in the same shade or it may end up looking like a uniform for a mental hospital.
10. Embrace your inner princess and wear colors you love. At the end of the day, its all about you and not what Style.com says.
