We’d like to think that as we get older we become wiser. We learn to choose friends better, learn that trends are a privilege rather than a right, fall in love less easily and, yes, learn to take better care of ourselves.
These days I make sure that I gulp the whole alphabet of vitamins, eat well and drink for health (and not only for the sole purpose of amnesia). After watching two seasons of Nip/Tuck straight on DVD, I’ve also promised myself never to go under the knife. Well, maybe I’ll eat my words in 20 years, but I’ll try not to.
In order to age gracefully, I decided that I had to come up with a plan. Operation: Blunt Knife had to come into order. When it comes to aging the number one culprit, aside from time, itself, is the sun, which is more menacing than ever.
When I was younger, my first tube of sunblock came from those colorful zinc protectors that surfers in Hawaii used. I primarily begged my mom to buy it, not for protection but because it was cool to use as makeup (I was not allowed to use makeup then and I had to resort to something!). So I had lilac lips and green lids for quite sometime (which are very now actually come to think of it).
I’ve never been a fan of the porcelain look, for reasons that I look like a Hen Lin siopao when I sport a pallor. So having an SPF nothing in my beach bag was a natural choice. I’d smooth on the gooey cream and pray to the high heavens that I would look like the roast chicken I had for lunch.
Three years of dermis rape and I wisened up. These days I don’t hit the beach with anything less than good SPF. Contrary to Baywatch pearls of wisdom, one still can tan with a high SPF whether you like it or not. Just more slowly and the color lasts longer than a quick bake.
Another thing one should learn about sun care is it should be consistent. Weird things happen in the beach, people, even the prudest of them all prance around in garments smaller than their honeymoon lingerie and also slather themselves with the most nourishing skin protectants. The city can be an even more menacing playpen for aging elements.
