FROM COFFEE TO COCKTAILS - Celine Lopez -
Rough, unfinished woolen fabric of a soft, flexible texture resembling cheviot or homespun, but more closely woven. It is made in either plain or twill weave and may have a check, twill, or herringbone pattern. Subdued, interesting color effects (heather mixtures) are obtained by twisting together different-colored woolen strands into a two- or three-ply yarn. Tweeds are desirable for outer wear, being moisture resistant and very durable."

That’s how the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001 defines tweeds

Yawn.

As boring as Tweeds sound, its renaissance this season proves to be anything but. When I think of tweed fabric, I think of those Mitford sisters, The Duchess of York and Princess Margaret who always were mischievous wearing those deceptively prim prints. Maybe there was promise of adventure in them after all.

It’s everywhere, from Madison to Greenhills, it’s what the aristos wore to look dignified, what the middle class wore to look regal and what we wear today to look anything but dull.

This hardy material, that has found its way among the most skeletal of bodies to the most bourgeois of clutches, is the new plaything of our favorite fashion canines. Or maybe simply just the canines.

Look how it saved Paris Hilton from Anna Nicole Smith-land (well, at least for the time being) after her People’s Choice Award-winning home movie hit computer monitors in every household. Look how Winona tried to use it to save her from looking like a pharma-fueled psycho. Hmmm, didn’t quite work. Hey, it’s just a fabric, not the Shroud of Turin, ok.

Well, whatever it is, let it amuse you with its rock star incarnation that will keep you looking smart but not nerdy.

Patrice Ramos-Diaz, that soft-voiced Pygmalion, has spun frothy confections for the creamiest of dames along with that draping maverick from Samar, Puey Quinones, who is well on his way to be the next chosen one (You’ll see! You’ll see!) have shaken up a small batch of tweed miracles.

"Old tweeds are usually worn as a set– a classic jacket with a slim knee length skirt (think Jackie O in her state visits to France). The new tweeds are a bit more quirky, usually embellished with trimming or beads. The new way to wear it is to pair a jacket with jeans, or dress down a tweed skirt with a t-shirt. It could also be worn as a dress or even a trench for travelling," Patrice enthuises. "It’s a fun material to play with, so we jazzed it up by experimenting with the cut. She adds that, "There are different types of tweeds. There are some silk mafka tweeds that are not that warm. I have a friend from New York who thinks that Manila is one of the coldest places around. That’s because we are either inside our cars with the aircon full blast–-where it’s so cold that our windows get misty–or in an office, a hotel, restaurant, and anywhere indoors where we always find ourselves asking someone (like a waiter) to adjust the temperature."

With that said it’s time to get worked up with those tweeds of wonder.
