Kundirana sets benefit concert

Kundirana, the high school singing group of La Salle Green Hills, will stage its first major benefit concert on Dec. 13 and 14 at the AFP Theater at 7 p.m. The show is directed by Ramon Acoymo.

Kundirana was a term coined by a De La Salle Brother. The term is a combination of two words kundiman and harana. For almost 32 years, Kundirana has aimed to develop the musical and artistic abilities of the students with the hope that they show their gratitude to God. More than being a high school singing group, Kundirana is a ministry that has been aspiring to provide goodwill and joy to the less fortunate through the medium of music as well as performing arts. They visit centers for street children, orphanages, prisons, hospitals and charitable institutions because they believe their ministry of touching hearts and spreading the Good News, especially with the less privileged.

Kundirana is supported by the La Salle Young Artists’ Foundation, a foundation that supports institutions like Kuya Drop-In Center for street children in Cubao and the Bahay Pag-Asa in Bacolod City, a rehabilitation center for children in conflict with the Law committed by the Family Court. Every year, they have three major benefit concerts and the usual beneficiaries are the said institutions.

Some of its major recognitions, achievements and awards are: Aliw’s twice awardee as the 1985 and 1987 Best Cultural Group of the Philippines; United Nations Honor Award in 1986; Marian Peace Award in 1988; Testimonial Recognition from California Senate in 1984; Disneyland Plaque of Recognition in 1988; Capitol Rotunda Special Presentation US Congress, Washington, DC in 1984; International Day Philippine Representation, Washington Monument, Washington DC, 1986; Kundirana Bus Shelter, constructed to honor the Kundirana at the Agana Highway in Guam, USA, 1985; and Conferment of Honor by the Guam Legislature in 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990.
