In a country where such is a birthright, this is often taken for granted, sometimes thought of as an embarrassing disadvantage. But the sun worshippers, realize its essential value in the "School of Sexy". There is beauty beyond white. So bronze up!

SUNTAN VS. SUNSCREEN

Use suntan lotion if you want to darken your skin. It will, at the same time, protect it from the sun’s UV rays. Use sunscreen simply for sun protection when swimming or hanging out on the beach or by the pool.

• If you stay under the sun often, you can use sun-tanning lotion. The effect varies from one person to another. That’s why some people stay white in spite of gallons of suntan lotion and hours under the sun.

The key to having a really great tan is to bake early in the morning. All that Vitamin D will keep you both beautiful and bronzed.

BY THE BOTTLE

To self-tan, follow easy instructions so you won’t stain clothes and can lengthen the tan. This usually lasts the whole day depending on your activities; just re-apply when necessary.

BEFORE YOU BURN...

• For the fair-skinned, you have to really slather on the lotion, otherwise you are in danger of getting first-degree burns. Darker people have greater tolerance for the heat because of melanin (pigments that determine the darkness of skin). Fairer people become redder or slightly dark beige, while darker folks get a brown finish.

• Just because you want a tan doesn’t mean you’ll look like J. Lo. Notice that when you’re by the pool, you get a grayish look. But if you go to the beach, you get a reddish or deeper brown color. It’s all about the reflection of the light on the water.

• Some people use beer, iodine, and even your regular Coca-Cola to enhance their tan. This works for some. It all depends on your base or original color. If you’re darker you get a glow; if you’re fair, only slightly redder. It is all caused by the reflection of light on the substance on your skin that makes it a participant to the tanning process.

Remember! Too much exposure to the sun, real or reel, is always bad. It’ll hasten the aging of your skin and endanger you with cancer-causing sun rays.
