More Life Into Westlife
December 19, 2001 | 12:00am
Just a few months back, Shane, Nicky, Brian, Kian and Mark of Westlife staged the biggest concert Manila has ever seen this year. By the rate their new album "World Of Our Own" is going, it won’t be long when public clamor will have the boys who popularized such big hits as "Swear It Again" and "My Love" return to Pinoy shores.
Now, girls, ask yourselves this: What if they come to date one of you by then?
Incredible, true, but not improbable. And as the saying goes, best be prepared than sorry should it happen. Of course, you could tell the Irish quintet about the 52 platinum discs they’ve earned across. Or you might engage their attention by singing to them some, if not all, their eight UK number one. Then again, you might win some brownie points by expounding on the importance of the various awards they’ve won in so brief a stay in the business (the biggest would be that of the Guiness Book of Records citation of having the most consecutive awards).
But then they already know all these so what’s the point? Better for you to know about some personal facts about them and bowl them over with your devotion. The following are some tidbits of information you need to arm yourselves with to really stand out incase that dream date with Westlife happens.
Shane Filan was born June 7, 1979 in Stigo, Ireland. The youngest of four boys and three girls, he stands 5’9" and is big on horses and dogs. In fact he has, a German Shepherd named Kaisler who waits for him back home. If you really want his eyes to light up, you’ve got to learn three letters by heart: BMW. Yes, he’s in love with his BMW M-Series car more than anyone or anything!
Nicky Byrne is a Virgo who’s into football and snooker before he joined Westlife. Nicholas (as his mother would call him) used to play football for Leeds and Ireland. Standing 5’10", Nicky has one younger brother and sister. Now, should things get a little tense over, say, a candle-lit dinner, just mention the lucky socks he wears onstage to win a coy smile from him. Just don’t mention dogs, though; Nick’s only dog, Ben, ran away just a year ago!
As for Mark Patrick Feehily, faking a little rebellious side (if you don’t have one) might work wonders for you. After all, he’s a self-confessed troublemaker when he was still a kid. Given his Taurean nature (May 28, 1980) that shouldn’t come as a surprise. The elder of two brothers, Mark keeps fit by playing tennis and football whenever his schedule permits. He also has a Labrador retriever called Snoopy so better be in the know on doggie talk.
The tallest at 6’, it’s hard to believe that Bryan was once overweight. He is so keen on maintaining is current form by playing football as much as he can. Born April 11, 1980 in Dublin, Bryan has only one sibling (a younger sister). He also has a Shih Tzu called Chip to which he probably told his first kissing experience when he was 17.
Lastly, Kian Egan. Like most Pinoys, Kian comes from a large family. He’s got one younger brother and sister, two older sisters and one older brother back home in Sligo. Born on April 29, Kian loves working out and can play a multitude of musical instruments including the piano, guitar, bass, drums, clarinet, sax and the flute!
So there you have it, girls. Keep your fingers crossed and hope that you’ll be queen of their hearts.
