What’s up with Prinze charming?

- From the Philippine Star’s YS -
Freddie Prinze Jr. is in no hurry to outgrow the adulation of teenage girls, even if he’s in his mid-20s and getting ready for marriage. "I enjoy knowing that this specific group supports me and believes in me and wants good things for me," says the 25-year-old actor. "Not everyone has that."

Although Prinze may not do Oscar-caliber pictures, he has collected multiple acting honors from Teen Magazine, not to mention Male Hottie of the Year honors at the 1999 Nickelodeon Teen Choice Awards. He sometimes acts like he’s the same age as his fans, orchestrating elaborate wargames with sponge balls in his home and staging practical jokes on co-stars (he once infuriated Julia Stiles by soaking her with a container strategically placed above her trailer door).

But friends say there’s a budding maturity to Prinze, which shows in his reading material. He recently finished Henry Kissinger’s sober tome Does America Need a Foreign Policy? but insists his favorite books are children’s fantasies like JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

Prinze’s breakthrough hit She’s All That plus his follow-up romantic comedies Down to You and Boys and Girls forged a core following of young girls. When he tried to do something for an older audience, last February’s Head Over Heels, he found he couldn’t shake the teenyboppers. "Head Over Heels wasn’t intended for teens at all," Prinze says. "It wasn’t my fault that they went and showed up. That was my fan base! So they went to go see it and it’s cool if they want to."

In his latest film, Summer Catch, Prinze plays a poor, wannabe baseball player who falls for a local rich girl (Jessica Biel). Since the movie is another youthful romantic comedy, Prinze says critics may slam it, but his young fans will love it.

And in his next movie, a live-action adaptation of Scooby-Doo, the lanky heartthrob sends up his previous roles as swaggering, clean-cut young men. He plays golden-maned detective Fred Jones, who "is always taking credit for all the crime-solving but never puts forward any effort."

While filming in Australia for six months, he dyed his hair blond every week, leaving it "like straw." "It was dead, dead, dead." So he shaved his head.

Now he’s planning to let his dark locks grow back while taking some time off with fiancée Sarah Michelle Gellar, star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. "I was away from my family and friends so now is kind of like the catching-up period," Prinze says. "I just want to relax back at home and cook dinner."
