SAY IT AS IT IS

Interviews - Interviews by Lexi Schulze and Denise Mendoza of Young Star Magazine -
Why Sarah and Derek? Why not?

Two people. One a television personality; the other a nine-to-fiver in a security agency. Both young. Both full of aspirations. Both beautiful in their own right. As everyone is.

But let’s just forget—even for a second—that these two are some of the more striking faces of their generation. This fact tends to bring forth many a preconceived notion…the exact opposite intention of this exercise. Because, at the end of the day, stripped of their pleasant visage, they are still just people. Youthful ones at that. Bearers of the relentless spirit of individuality, ingenuity, and hope. Out to make positive change. Seemingly rebellious at times, yet filled with good intentions. Going their own pace. Against the tide. Not at all affected by the norm that is.

So young. So vanguard.

WHAT IS CHARACTER?

Everybody has character and personality. It’s what makes somebody unique and appealing. It’s really hard to define. It’s something that you can’t see.

WHAT IS PASSION?

Passion is your love for whatever it could be…something you’d really want to do.

IS BEING DIFFERENT WORTH IT?

I don’t know why over here in the Philippines everyone wants to be safe and just be the same. I don’t care what other people think. I do what I want to do. I don’t want to be like everybody else.

WHAT PISSES YOU OFF?

Racism. I hate racism. I’ve gotten into a lot of trouble with that. Tsismis doesn’t bug me, what bugs me is actually people who talk behind your back. Like if somebody said he’s just another pretty face, in my face, then I’ll respect them for that. But I hate people who when they’re around you they praise you, and then when they’re not, they bite.

ARE YOU A ROMANTIC OR A REALIST?

I’m a realist. I take everything one step at a time. I take what comes to me. If I see an opportunity, I grab it.

I don’t know why but I don’t like things organized. I like things all "discombobulated." I like it over here. This is life. This is real life. Over there in England, it’s like everything is so easy. Your day or week is just like routine. Here you don’t know what to expect and you just take it as it comes. One day, you might not be able to get to work because of a tornado, typhoon or traffic.

WHAT IS CHARACTER?

Personality. A person with character doesn’t get lost in the crowd…he stands out. It’s being able to carry yourself. It could be a bad thing, it could be a good thing.

It’s the force that drives you. It’s your motivation for anything, the arts, living... for life.

IS BEING DIFFERENT WORTH IT?

Definitely. Because if we all start conforming then nobody’s ever going to get anywhere. Don’t live your life for anybody else but yourself. If they accept you for that then cool!

WHAT PISSES YOU OFF?

Hypocrisy. I think they should just shut up if their going to try and make an image. I’m the type of person who can be plastic. I’ve caught myself so many times and it’s a really disgusting feeling. I’m a blatantly honest person which can work to my disadvantage more than to my advantage.

ARE YOU A ROMANTIC OR A REALIST?

I’m a realist with a very optimistic outlook in life. I know where I stand but I always try to make things seem better than they are. This is our time, this is our generation. I know generations before have said that but now, everybody’s got so much more attitude, passion, and freedom to make a difference. Maybe we should cut the bullshit and stop the sosyalan beso-beso thing and really have significant conversations. We’re all feisty and we all have the same wants. If we don’t act, then that’s what our generation’s here for.
