Rarin’ Rhona
November 13, 2001 | 12:00am
There’s a new pop princess on the block. Yes, folks, another talented woman all set to give established pop royalty like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston a run for their money. Enter Rhona, the latest addition to Rodney Jerkins’ (of the Darkchild fame) star-studded stable of Grammy award winners and chart-toppers.
Listening through Rhona’s self-titled, 11-track debut album, it’s apparent that she has the makings of a future superstar. Blessed with an amazing vocal range, Rhona takes on each funk-filled track with the ease of a music veteran. Perhaps her past experience as a church choir member (as a child) and later on as a Mouseketeer for Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club has truly helped her develop her vocal skills.
Whatever it is, Rhona is making waves in the U.S. music industry as well as here in the Philippines. Her first breakout single, the catchy "Satisfied" entered the top 10 charts of local radio stations instantly. Her remake of the popular ballad "I Wanna Know What Love Is" will undoubtedly grab the hearts of sentimental Filipinos as well. Rhona’s voice truly soars on this track. The other tracks on this album are tinged with funky, groovy pop sounds. Die-hard pop and R&B fans will love this album.
Does Rhona have what it takes to dethrone the likes of Mariah Carey? Only time will tell. But in the meantime, her record bespeaks of great potential. This woman may be destined for superstardom.
