Abuse of Power

Pio Garcia - The Philippine Star

How twisted can politicking in sports be?

Well, look at our chances for snatching a gold in basketball in the SEA Games this year. They went poof along with Richie Garcia’s refusal to let a cadet squad be rolled out in competition, insisting that we need professional help to dismantle what is meager competition.

Well, I am hats off to this guy.

He wants to win badly. He wants to shame our neighbors in front of their own turf. He wants someone to plant the Philippine flag on the mountain of corpses piled on the hard court and roaring with bravado about how easily they vanquished their foes.

Here’s my beef: if you want to build up kids who will be elevated to National Team Senior status, they might as well use the SEA Games as their training grounds. Pulverizing opponents is nice. But letting the youth who will one day wear flag and country on their chests gain experience in international play is even better. It’s a good gamble. It’s not the Olympics yet, Mr. Garcia. You’re making yourself look like Richie D’ Horsie, the comedian.

I’d wholly agree with you if it’s the FIBA competitions Or the Olympics, for that matter. But on the SEA Games stage? Let the kids have their rein.

Remember, the Sinag boys did us proud. They held their own against grown men. Some of them are Gilas mainstays already. But hey, Richie, look at this, they demolished competition against 25+ to 30+ fellas. So why abandon that? The kids can give out the kind of murder you want on the hard court.

Not only will this do them good for their own careers, but look at the exposure our Bobby Rays, Kiefers, RRs, Nambatacs, Dela Rosas, Pascuals got when they joined international competitions. The Philippines will be known as a breeding ground of future greats with their showing. Heck, I’m staking we can be a breeding ground for crack guards that can rival those of South Korea and even China.

GIVE THE KIDS A CHANCE.

Let the Sinag boys handle this. They can do it on their own. And it’s high time you recognize them. Shame on sports politicking.

And since we’re on the topic of abuse of power…

It’s not fair that if someone “above” you uses their own power to further their ends. Whether that is to destroy you or not, is totally up to them. However, that’s still ugly.

No, we are not trying to demoralize by any means whatsoever. I am merely stating what’s on my head regarding the issue, to bring it to light. To make someone notice, and for them to do something about it. If my methods aren’t nice, well, they’re not meant to be in the first place.

Armed with the Jesuit label of education, I am just sticking to what I believe best: to deliver hard truth, no bias, and cutting to the bone if must. There’s no sense in sugarcoating words if they aren’t meant to be in the first place. I am not trying to please everyone here. That’s a freaking headache. However, do mind, each to his own. I won’t conform to the status quo, of what you generally want out of me, because that ain’t me. I’ll fight. I’ll keep on fighting in my own ways. Ugly as they may, as soon as you feel that seething rage boiling over and trying to change your ways, then I have won.

Like Batman, I’m not the hero you guys need. Not now. Not ever. But I never abuse my position of power, if I have it, to destroy folks whether they be in the sporting world or not.

Say what you need to say. Even if it’s the ugly truth. For whence will they learn if you don’t point it out? They like it to be minced with sugary words? Well, not with me. I’ll give you the bare truth, the nasty truth.

Why?

It’s the real world. People can be harsher. Like your boss for example.
