‘Makati’s Sulô: Where Taste was Style’ available at National Book Store
MANILA, Philippines - Author and visual artist Erlinda Enriquez Panlilio is set to release her book Makati’s Sulô: Where Taste Was Style, a social history and personal memoir — a compendium of numerous fascinating details that bring back that vanished time with Panlilio’s characteristic verve and humor, and a nostalgia many of her readers will relate to.
The Sulo would come to be known as an iconic restaurant, marked by a soaring roof reminiscent of the prow of a vinta sail boat, which people found exotic. It was the first restaurant of its era to house several restaurant outlets under its roof. The Sulô was a landmark when Ayala first began developing Makati’s commercial center.
Sulô had been a trailblazer in its time, with wine and food tasting, international food festivals, the Fiesta Filipina and memorable catering events. Some of Sulô’s signature recipes such as adobong sugpo, adobong talaba, batchoy, Aling Pinang’s Chicken and Pork Adobo, chicken relleno, fresh lumpiang ubod, kinilaw na tangigue, Lengua en Salza Roja, and Prawns Thermidor, among others are also featured in the book.
Following her retirement from the family business of hotels and restaurants, Erlinda Enriquez Panlilio went back to the University of the Philippines, where she had graduated 35 years ago, to work for an M.A. in Creative Writing. Part of her thesis became the book, Teacher to Tycoon: The Life and Times of Trinidad Diaz Enriquez, which received the Best Biography Award by the Manila Critics Circle in the National Book Awards in 2000. Since then she has edited and co-edited award-winning anthologies including Why I Travel & Other Essays by 14 Women, From this Day Forward, Comfort Food, Slow Food, and The Manila We Knew. Her latest anthology Belonging: Stories of Relationships was a finalist in the National Book Awards in 2009. Her essay “Saying Goodbye to the House” won 2nd prize in the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature in 2009.
Apart from writing, Linda is also a respected visual artist having exhibited her oil paintings in four group shows and in two solo exhibitions.
