Less pain, more gain with MakatiMed ob-gyn Minimally Invasive Surgery

MANILA, Philippines - Because of the possible risks and side effects, the inevitable pain it would cause, and the difficulty of having to go through it, physically, emotionally, and mentally, people have always had negative predispositions when it comes to medical surgeries.

But at premier health institution Makati Medical Center, with its latest advancements and innovations in technology, scary surgical procedures have become a thing of the past.

Always the pioneer of new treatments, MakatiMed gives patients the option to undergo Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), under ob-gynecologist Dr. Mae Syki-Young.

“MIS is an advanced procedure that primarily prevents patients from having a big scar typically acquired in common operations,” explains Syki-Young.

MIS, which MakatiMed has been offering for years, fits the lifestyle of many today, especially those who lead busy schedules and want quicker, easier, and more hassle-free ways of being relieved of medical complications.

“In fact, I think MIS should be considered the standard procedure as patients recover faster and experience less pain, blood loss, discomfort and other side effects with this technique,” she says.

MIS is a specialized surgical procedure that removes masses or growths, such as cysts or lipomas, which result in minimal scarring and less recovery time for the patient. Most surgeons usually cut along only a small portion of the mass to be able to access or remove it.

Instead of the usual large opening, MIS is performed through two to three tiny incisions as small as 0.5 to 1.5 cm., a long and thin tube with a miniature camera attached at the end of it is passed through the incisions, so surgeons can get a clear and magnified view of the surgical area.

Other special tools are passed through the small openings for the surgeon to dissect or fix what’s needed to be addressed inside the patient’s body.

Because the wounds are smaller, it requires lesser time to heal, and allows the patient to recover quickly. With MIS, patients may only need a small bandage on the incision, rather than multiple stitches or staples to close a large wound. As a result, the patient is less exposed to infection and would oftentimes not be required to stay long in the hospital.

“Although, of course, like any other medical procedure, there are risks to MIS, but the pros always outweigh the cons,” says Syki-Young.

“MIS can become risky for patients who are suspected of having cancer, and those who have already undergone surgical procedures in the past. Patients should also know that during MIS, depending on the needs of the patient and the current situation at hand, doctors may decide to revert back to open surgery, although such cases are very rare.

“Overall what MIS brings is hope for patients whose lives can be improved with surgical operations. With this advanced procedure, they are spared from the prolonged pain and recovery period and they need not be fearful of surgeries anymore,” she adds.
