Macau sets the stage for fireworks event

-
The world’s best fireworks displays are set to go off in Macau, as pyrotechnic titans from around the globe compete in the 14th Macau International Fireworks Display Contest.

The contest began yesterday and will continue on the three remaining Saturdays of September in time for Macau’s Mid-Autumn Festival, and the celebration of the National Day of the People’s Republic of China on Oct. 1.

Using the vast velvet night sky above Macau as their canvass, 10 participating teams from Australia, China, Japan South Korea, Switzerland, Portugal, Thailand, Taiwan, United Kingdom and the Philippines will show off their unique exhibitions, painting it with a myriad of vibrant colors and lights.

The foremost competition of its kind anywhere, the Macau International Fireworks Display Contest has, for the past 13 years, featured a total of 60 international teams, starting in 1989 with only five teams joining.

The rest of the world soon caught on through the tremendous effort put in by its organizers, the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO). By 1995, it had become a colossal event, with the number of participants increasing to 10.

Unlike in the past years where the fireworks were set off from the ground, this year’s fireworks displays will be launched, for the first time, from barges in the sea, with each display lasting about 18 minutes.

This year’s competitors are Global Pyrotechnics from Australia, Hanwa Corp. from Korea, Hannah Corp. from the Philippines, Sy Yuan Fireworks from Taiwan, Pyrofel-Pirotecnia Lda from Portugal, Pacific Pyro Co. Ltd from Thailand, Nico Lunig Event GmbH from Germany, Morikami Enka Kogyosho Inc. from Japan, China Hunan Jixiu Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Co. Ltd from China and Evenment Ciel from France.

Restaurants at the Macau Tower, located more than 200 meters above the ground, will invite locals and visitors to sample their delicious Macanese cuisine while viewing the full impact of the light and sound spectacle from their unique vantage point. Photo and drawing competitions will also be held to capture the contest’s spectacular moments.

Adding more fun and sparkle are equally spectacular events, including the Macau Fireworks Fiesta, the Harley Davidson Parade featuring the Harley Owners Group of Hong Kong, and the 12th Macau International Jazz Festival to be held on Sept. 27-29 at the Macau Tower.

"Explore Macau Holidays" packages are available for the Macau Fireworks Festival, starting from $306, inclusive of airfare, hotel accommodation, meals, tours and transfers to the festival venue. For more information, contact the Macau Government Tourist Office at 830-2005, 830-2013 or e-mail at mgtophil@info.com.ph.
