Watch Measure for Measure
MANILA, Philippines - After the successful run of Ang Nawalang Kapatid, Dulaang UP is back for Measure for Measure, a tragicomedy written by William Shakespeare about love, lust, judgment, and justice. The story is set in Vienna, and revolves around a group of soldiers, prostitutes, pimps, and a community leader who shuffles between religion and corruption. Even if it is set in Vienna, it’s eerily familiar, especially the bit about deceiving public officials who act one way in public and another in private (of course, this plot is a timeless piece that can be applied any year in local politics). Measure for Measure is a show that will make you wonder if life is imitating art, or art imitating life. The play will be performed in both English and Filipino, a stunning feat when you consider that these are two separate productions catering to each language. The play is directed by Alexander Cortez, with Ron Capinding doing the Filipino translation. The show opens this week until Sept. 7 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, Palma Hall, UP Diliman. When buying tickets, make sure to pick the production with the language you prefer.
Go to the Global Pinoy Bazaar
It’s easier to find artisanal, organic, and free-range products from abroad compared to ones made here. If you want to find locally-made products, you have to go to specialty shops or restaurants to find them. Luckily, the biggest gathering of homegrown brands will gather this weekend for Global Pinoy Bazaar, a chance for 200 entrepreneurs to showcase their locally-made items. Some interesting products that will be there are clothes made from pinya fabric from Pinya Shop, boat shoes made in Marikina from Blackbeard,and palay-made sandals from Sewn Sandals. Aside from the bazaar, there will be talks from Pepe Diokno on his new film Above the Clouds, Bebang Siy, Joselito Reyes, Eros Atalia, and Jun Cruz Reyes on their new books, a quiz night with craft challenges, and a salsa class. It’s time to support local entrepreneurs. No preservatives, no added chemicals, no problem! Global Pinoy Bazaar will be held at the World Trade Center. Learn to paint with Ernest Concepcion
It’s one thing to learn to paint from your friendly tito, but it’s another when you learn from someone who has exhibited in New York, California, Canada, and Hong Kong. But that’s what you can do tomorrow because renowned artist Ernest Concepcion is offering a demonstration class at the Ayala Museum. He will teach basic drawing techniques, but a quick look at his drawing style will show that his definition of basic means “out of this world” and “surreal.” It’s a great way to test out your imagination and see what this artiste can draw out of you. The session starts at 3PM, and the registration fee comes with a museum pass and drawing materials. Wit and imagination not included.
