Supreme agenda
Who to worship: Taylor Swift
MANILA, Philippines - Taylor Swift is fun to listen to when you’ve had your heart broken. There’s a sense of satisfaction in singing along to Mean, even if it sounds like a playground taunt. Heartbreak aside, it’s fun to listen to Taylor whatever the state of your heart, and you can listen to her sing live next Friday when she comes to Manila to perform her Red tour. Red will support her album of the same name, with its singles Red, I Knew You Were Trouble, and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. Critics have praised how she updated a lot of her songs to dubstep and doo wop, and bonded with the audience to talk about feelings and heartbreak. Heartbreak is tough, but when Taylor talks to you about mean boys with their words like knives, and makes you promise that you are never, ever getting back together with your ex, you know you’re going to be alright. Taylor Swift’s concert will be held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
What to do:Ayala Museum Design Talks
Dan Matutina is one of the country’s top illustrators. Aside from seeing his works in magazines and other media, he’s also part of Plus63 Design Co., a collective of artists who has worked with local and international businesses, both startups and established. On his own, he has worked with Google, The Wall Street Journal, Nike, Heineken and Coca-Cola. Today, he will be holding fort at the Ayala Museum for Design Talks, where he will discuss his art and drawing style. Dan’s art is a curious mix of old and modern, and handmade and digital, so it’ll be interesting to pick the mind of a creative genius. Ayala Museum’s Design Talks will be held at 3 p.m.
Where to go shopping: Muni Market Day
Being a shopaholic is akin to having a life-threatening (and wallet-threatening) disease, but there’s nothing to worry about going all out at the Muni Market Day. Shop to your heart’s content because all the products are locally-made and eco-friendly, and aim to maximize the impact on the community and minimize the impact on the planet. Some of the products you can buy at the Muni Market Day are beach-friendly towels from Lagu, shoes made from Philippine handwoven textiles from Tala Luna, artisanal liqueur and spreads from Nipa Foods, premium Filipino tea from Tsaa Daloy, organic produce from Lotus Pod, products from the GK Enchanted Farm, flavored chocolates from Theo Philo, bags from Rags2Riches, and many more. Bring all your money and tell yourself it’s for a good cause. Muni Market Day will be held tomorrow at The Grove by Rockwell, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Where to show your fandom: NexCon Manila
Are you a geek? This weekend, all fandoms will unite for NexCon Manila, the biggest gathering of everything science fiction and fantasy for genre fans and creators from the Philippines and abroad. In just two days, the organizers managed to pack film screenings (including a special one tomorrow), a Doctor Who trivial pursuit challenge, special panels on science fiction and fantasy in Philippine film and television, as well as Filipino comics, a meet and greet with science fiction and fantasy writers, a cosplay masquerade and rumble, and a closing concert. But the highlight of the event looks to be the GeekFight! Battle Royale. Not much has been said about this trivia game, but it’s said to be “the mother of all geek fights.†Sounds bloody. NexCon Manila will take place at the Bayanihan Center in Pasig City.
