MANILA, Philippines - What to watch: Cinemanila International Film Festival
We have the Cinemanila International Film Festival to thank for bringing in world-class award-winning films from the Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals to the Philippines, and for catapulting deserving Filipinos films to world cinema. This time, Cinemanila is back for its 15th run, with the same philosophy of promoting good movies. This year, the festival has a promising lineup, with seven Oscar contenders being screened: Ilo-ilo (Singapore), Neighboring Sound (Brazil), The Missing Picture (Cambodia), In Bloom (Georgia), Winter of Discontent (Egypt), Heli (Mexico), and Norte: Sa Dulo ng Kasaysayan (Philippines). Cinemanila runs at SM Aura until December 22.
Where to get your art fix: A Curious Limbo
A new conversation in art is taking place, and critically-acclaimed artist Manuel Ocampo is leading the way, proving that art doesn’t need to be stuffy or “high-brow.†He is the brains behind A Curious Limbo, a pop-up space where artists can thrive in the ambiguous and explore their identities and capabilities. Tonight, he will gather some of the scene’s luminaries for a scavenger sale of curious art. Some of the names invited are Mich Dulce, Dex Fernandez, Dina Gadia, Nicole Coson, Lena Cobangbang, Romeo Lee, MM Yu, Jeona Zoleta, Allan Balisi, and many more. Discover limbo at Post Gallery in Cubao X.
Where to chill out: The Strict Rules of
Polite Society at Today x Future
Call it the calm before the holiday storm, but The Strict Rules of Polite Society will provide a brief respite from the stress that is Christmas. Don’t get us wrong, we’re already feeling the holiday spirit, but we’re reaching our breaking point: the traffic, shopping, and mass congregation at malls are too much to take. Strict Rules will change all that with a night of indie pop, electrolounge, mod, twee, post punk, and Brit pop from Sgt. Vez, Liquid Software, Samantha, Happy Tears, and Flotation Device. Chill out and drop out at Today x Future tonight for a few hours of “me time.â€
