Koji Arsua - The Philippine Star

Get a film education at the Cinema One Originals

MANILA, Philippines - Some of the best films we’ve seen recently were from the Cinema One Originals, and this year’s edition is back to show you how far we’ve come in cinema. This year will feature 15 competition films from both established and up-and-coming directors, and the line-up stays true to the festival credo, which is to be risky and unpredictable in terms of selection. The festival will run from Nov. 11 to 19 and will feature a diverse range of films. We recommend Adolfo Alix Jr.’s Alamat ni China Doll, about a woman who rediscovers her past after a chance encounter, Miko Livelo’s Blue Bustamante, about an OFW who makes a living in Japan as a superhero on a Japanese show, Borgy Torre’s Kabisera, which deals with the hopeless descent into drug dealing, Mes de Guzman’s Sitio, a “barriotic psychological thriller,” and Keith Sicat’s Woman of the Ruins, a sci-fi film with Peque Gallaga as an actor. The other films are just as interesting, with a mixture of modern and traditional premises from the call center industry, male prostitution, spirits, snake-men, and death. The movies will be screened at Glorietta, TriNoma, and Robinsons Galleria.

Get handy with arts and crafts at 10A Alabama

We’re going back to our roots as we’re suddenly re-embracing arts and crafts. But this isn’t the sloppy arts and crafts we used to do as kids. These are the advanced classes they didn’t teach us in grade school — meaning the stuff here are for hardcore hobbyists with an eye for detail. Fortunately, we don’t have to prove our klutziness and can instead buy the finished products at the 10A Alabama Handmade Arts and Crafts Fair, a two-day ode to everything pretty. Expect a Filipino version of Etsy with a touch of hipster. The fair features handmade items from Filipino artisans like artworks, notebooks, stationery, grooming products, furniture, toys, and even clothes. The fair will be held at 10A Alabama, Quezon City, near E. Rodriguez.

Relive summer and make with forever with Close-Up

We are at that point where summer is either a distant memory or a goal — so near yet so far. Close-Up is bridging that gap with Forever Summer, the “freshest beach party in the city.” We think it’s a stretch to call it a beach party, but we bet it’s going to be hot with the impressive lineup: Foxes, Rebecca & Fiona, Aia de Leon, Taken by Cars, DJ Mars Mirando, Nights of Rizal, and Never the Strangers. The actual summer season may still be a few months, but we’re free to imagine that it’s upon us, even just for today. But hey, summer can be a state of mind and if we say it’s forever, then it is. The concert will start at 2 p.m. and will go on until 1 a.m., at 9th Street, Bonifacio Global City.

Get art crazy at the Bloom Arts Festival

If you want a full-blown attack of the Stendahl Syndrome, head on over to Bloom Arts Festival next Friday for one of the art scene’s largest festivals, featuring over 100 artists in one venue. This year, Bloom Arts will be held at The Collective instead of Cubao X, and we’re interested to see how the organizers will set the place up for such a large exhibit. Bloom Arts will feature some of the raddest artists in many media, from painting to illustration, portraiture, and even washi! The night will also feature beer and music from Tarsius, Bent Lynchpin, Nouvul, Chocolate Grass, and Wilderness. Forget your stuffy museums and galleries. This is the coolest thing in art.
