Meet this year’s best artists at the Ateneo Art Awards
MANILA, Philippines - The Ateneo Art Awards is celebrating its first decade this year, setting a milestone for recognizing outstanding artists. For 2013, the spirit of supporting local talent continues as the awards honor the short-listed 13 best artists: Pio Abad, Allan Balisi, Charles Buenconsejo, Zean Cabangis, Buen Calubayan, Joey Cobcobo, Nikki Luna, Joven Mansit, Raffy Napay, Leeroy New, and Ryan Villamael (who is short-listed for two exhibitions). The exhibition will be held at the Grand Atrium of the Shangri-La Plaza from Aug. 2 to 12, with the awarding of the three artists, who will be invited to apply for international residency grants funded by the Ateneo Art Gallery and its partner institutions in Australia, Singapore, and the UK, on Aug. 8. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the exhibition will also showcase the past decade’s best in contemporary art beginning Aug. 6.
Spread the creative spirit with Design Co.Mission
We always imagined outreach programs to be boring affairs with no sense of fun. But Plus63 Design Co. is changing all that with the Design Co.Mission, a “passion project†that gathers designers, individuals, and hopefully the government, to collaborate on ideas that can improve public services, present new solutions, and strengthen branding. Today, the commission will feature design solutions with organizations, members of the government, and the public at a “show-and-tell†at the Ayala Museum at 3 p.m. Prepare to be wowed by the innovative ways we can improve the Philippines, using the prettiest of pictures and the most amazing designs.
Fall in love with Mario Maurer all over again
Don’t deny it. We know you’re totally crushing on Mario Maurer and that you watched Suddenly It’s Magic.... like 10 times. He’s been to the Philippines several times but he’s coming back tomorrow to make us all swoon again and remind us why we fell in love with him. He’s coming back for Penshoppe’s fan conference with Baifern Pimchanok, his fellow endorser for the clothing brand. His boyish charm and fine, good looks are what makes him irresistible to girls, guys (those with girlfriends), and everyone in between (who saw Love of Siam), so expect throngs of people to crowd The Block Atrium, SM City North Edsa at 2 p.m. and the SM Mall of Asia Atrium at 5 p. m. Go. We know you want to.
Watch Carly Rae Jepsen, maybe?
If people have the money to throw a “lavish†party at a hotel in Beverly Hills, maybe they should have thrown a private concert instead, featuring the talented Carly Rae Jepsen. Carly’s Philippine fanbase is so formidable that whoever can invite her for an intimate performance will be everyone’s BFF, no matter how questionable the source of money. But alas, everyone has to share Carly next Wednesday as she comes to Manila for her first concert here. Surely Carly needs no introduction, as her song Call Me Maybe was on everyone’s lips and computer screens as people attempted to make pa-cute? Let’s leave all the pa-cute to Carly this time, shall we? Her concert will be at the Araneta Center and will begin at 8 p.m.
