Avicii fever is here

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Over the years, Avicii has achieved so much as a DJ. Some of his notable achievements were headlining the world’s biggest electronic music festivals such as Ultra in Miami, Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas and Tomorrowland in Belgium; and collaborating with music icons such as Tiësto, David Guetta and Madonna. In 2011, Avicii ranked No. 6 on the Top 100 DJs list by DJ magazine, and ranked higher the following year, coming in at No. 3. Avicii’s hit Sunshine won as Best Dance Recording in 2011, while Levels was nominated as Best Dance Recording this year, both at the Grammys. In 2012, Avicii made history as the first DJ to headline Radio City Music Hall in New York. All of this Avicii was able to achieve at a very young age.

In an exclusive interview, Supreme gets up close and personal with the two-time Grammy-nominated Swedish DJ, asking Avicii how he tops himself each time. “It’s not really about topping something that I have done before; it’s about working hard and doing what I do,” said Avicii.

Avicii’s drive to work hard is backed by his inspirations in life. At the age of 24, Avicii looks up to today’s musical artists, both in and outside his genre, as one of his inspirations. When asked if there is any artist he dreams of collaborating with, Avicii mentioned Adele as his dream collaboration, saying she has the most incredible voice.

When it comes to his work, especially with his collaborations, criticism is inevitable. Avicii, who deals with criticism every day, strongly believes criticism should always be constructive. “It can be beneficial to see what people have to say, but in general, I just try to do my thing without listening too much to the Internet hate,”  he says.

Despite the Internet hate, dance music is most likely here to stay — and for a very long time, as people exceedingly patronize it. When asked where he thinks dance music is headed, Avicii excitedly replied, “Dance Music is still growing and reaching new audiences every day. The sound and the subgenres have really evolved since I started producing, but I think that’s good since that will only make the genre bigger. It’s an exciting time for DJs and producers.”

Dance music is definitely growing bigger. In fact, the recently concluded Ultra Music Festival in Miami had an overwhelming audience of over 100,000, coming from different parts of the world. The Electronic Dance Music (EDM) DJ said headlining Ultra Music Festival has been the highlight of his 2013. “I just love the vibe it creates and the crowd it draws; it’s truly an amazing experience,” added Avicii.

Avicii continues to draw hundreds of thousands of EDM lovers with his euphonious, fist-pumping and addicting music, this time in Manila and for the second time around. “I can’t wait to be back in the Philippines! It’s such an awesome place… and I have some new tracks that I hope to debut, so be ready,” said Avicii.

On May 15, Manila will experience “Avicii – Live” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena as Globe Tattoo, the country’s most reliable broadband, brings Avicii Live in Manila.
