Koji Arsua - The Philippine Star

Get free comics at Free Comic Book Day

MANILA, Philippines - We’ll pass on the jackets Willie Revillame is giving away on his show, but we’ll never say no to free comics. Today, National Book Store is participating in the worldwide phenomenon Free Comic Book Day, where people who visit are handed comics, free of charge. The event will be held at the fourth floor of their Quezon Avenue branch, and each person will receive three free comics. On top of that, graphic novels will be sold up to 70-percent off, seminars and book signings will be held by artists, and local independent comics will be available. Free Comic Book Day will try to set a world record for the most comic book sketches done in a single event. God bless freedom and free comics! Freedom starts at 9 a.m.

Have some ramen at the Nomama Ramen pop-up shop

Nomama is known to insiders as one of the best places in the metro to have ramen. Chef Him Uy de Baron’s slow-cooked method and fresh and organic ingredients (95 percent of the meat is locally sourced) have made Nomama a quick favorite among ramen enthusiasts looking for an extra kick. Today, Nomama is having the last of its pop-up kitchen in Rockwell, making it accessible for those living away from their Carlo Calma-designed store in Scout Tuason. The menu will feature Nomama classics like its gyoza and beef cheeks ramen, but it will also feature appetizers, salads, mains, and dessert. The pop-up kitchen will be open for lunch and dinner at La Galerie at Atelier 317, Palma Drive, near Rockwell.

Make good choices at the Rock For A Fully-Abled Nation

The elections aren’t a priority for some people, but when you invite some of the country’s best bands and throw a concert, you know it’s going to be a great motivation to exercise our right as Filipino citizens. On Monday, Rock For A Fully-Abled Nation will be held at the Eastwood Central Plaza to encourage and inspire people with disabilities — and everyone else — to make good choices. The bands playing will be Up Dharma Down, Itchyworms, Franco, Ebe Dancel, Malay, Kamikazee, Miko Pepito, Soapdish, Maude, Pulso, Righteous One, Long Time No See, and Turpitude. Show starts at 6 p.m.

Live it up and channel Ibiza at Club Haze

A club opening in The Fort may be unexciting and not really new, but when you consider that Club Haze, the new joint opening in The Fort Strip, is managed by Bigfish, you might want to reconsider. You see, Bigfish is behind some of the world’s best electronic parties (hello, Cream?) and albums. But what we’re really excited about the opening act — Paul Oakenfold. Oakenfold is one of the world’s best DJs, a constant figure in DJMag’s Top 100 DJs, figuring number one in 1998 and 1999. He has remixed songs for The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Radiohead, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and many others. His original music has also been nominated three times for Grammys. This man has elevated and reinvented dance music, and we’re finally getting a taste of what he can do, in a club that is known for the genre. Club Haze will open tonight.

Barter for knowledge

When was the last time you tried something for the first time? Join a Trade School Manila class today.

Trade School Manila is a non-traditional school that runs on barter. Started in 2012, Trade School Manila has offered a variety of classes — all dictated solely by the passion of the teachers. Anyone can sign up to teach in exchange for barter items. Since its inception, Trade School Manila has offered a mix of classes, from “Ukulele for Beginners” to “Making Your Money Grow” to “Makeup 101”!

How does Trade School Manila work with no money involved? Students simply make online class reservations on their website. Students then have to choose the barter items from the list requested by the teachers. On the day of the class, students give their barter items to the teachers in exchange for instruction. It’s that easy!
