Koji Arsua - The Philippine Star

Get wasted at Sinulog

MANILA, Philippines - Cebu is kicking off one of the first major festivals of the year with Sinulog, a three-day tribute to the Sto. Niño, in an orgy of events, parties, and contests. This year, at least four million visitors are expected to flock this weekend to the annual Sinulog Festival and dance competition, with P1 million as grand prize. Of course, the fluvial procession of the miraculous image of the Sto. Niño will take place today, a five-hour procession that will underscore the true meaning of the festival. This year will also highlight the canonization of Pedro Calungsod as the second Filipino saint so expect grandeur, lots of color, and lots of alcohol.

Paint the town at the Ati-atihan

If you prefer a more lively festival, or you can split your body and attend both Sinulog and Ati-Atihan, this festival is worth checking out for its distinct way of celebrating: painting soot on bodies to imitate the Aetas and participating in an infectious dance parade. The highlight of the event is the dance competition where contestants dress up in soot and indigenous costumes to celebrate the infant Jesus. Expect good-natured mayhem this weekend, especially tomorrow where they will hold the religious procession and dance.

Help save a â€˜pawikan’

Help raise funds to save the pawikan through Save Philippines’ Seas Pawikan Watchers in an art and music fest today at the Conspiracy Garden Cafe in Quezon City. The event will feature music from Flying Ipis, Extrapolation, and Peso Movement, along with mixed-media art from the collective Artists For Nature. The event will address the problem of animal endangerment, especially the pawikan. The sea turtle is the country’s most threatened species, and the event will mix awareness and conservation with music and art. All proceeds will go to the Pawikan Watchers, a training program to learn the biology and ecology of sea turtles as well as how to handle them. Party starts at 5 p.m., and the exhibit will last until Feb. 8. Conspiracy Garden Cafe is located at 59 Visayas Avenue.

Get mindf*cked  with Dex Fernandez

Blow your brains out with the brilliance that is Dex Fernandez’s :-) exhibit at Pablo Galleries, Fort. The exhibit is a collection of seizure-inducing paintings of neon colors and magnificent collages, best appreciated with a black light. The images are both grotesque and cute, laden with pop culture references and otherworldly creatures. The exhibit is a throwback to the rave scene that never really caught on in the Philippines, and on some level, a Keith Haring exhibit on LSD. :-) opened last week, but the show will run until Feb. 2. Pablo Galleries is located at Unit C-11 South of Market Condominium, Fort Bonifacio Global City.
