MANILA, Philippines - Be Scene and Herd at Young Star’s party

We here at The STAR love a good party, and we love throwing them, too. Today, our sister from the same mister Young Star is hosting Scene and Herd: Afternoon Sessions, an acoustic gig of up-and-coming musicians from different genres. YS advises you to “put your feet up, nurse a cold drink, and take in the music” from Eyedress, Don’t Bogart The Can… Man, Miki Hahn, and She’s Only Sixteen, along with a DJ set from Supermikki and Gabby Cantero’s Daylight Portraits. The event promises a relaxing and intimate afternoon filled with good music and good drinks at Aracama, The Fort Strip, at 2-6 p.m.

Celebrate Attraction! Reaction’s fifth anniversary at Route 196

Attraction! Reaction!, the town’s hottest gig, is celebrating its fifth anniversary tonight at Route 196. A!R!, as it is endearingly tagged by its increasing fanbase, will be hosting its fifth year with “All Tomorrow’s Parties” featuring music from The Strangeness, Halo Halo, Ang Bandang Shirley, Hannah + Gabi, Twin Lobster, Outer Hope, and Blast Ople. A!R! parties are frequent, but expect a bigger show this time as they welcome another year. If you’re coming from TEDxADMU, Route 196 is a short drive away and is the best place to discuss all the ideas heard from the talks and listen to great music.

Grow the nation at TEDxADMU

Be ready to grow the nation at this year’s TEDxADMU, today at the Ateneo campus. The initiative is the school’s way of raising awareness for “Ideas Worth Spreading” to the ADMU community and the city of Manila. TED, which stands for “Technology, Entertainment, and Design,” is a non-profit organization that began in California that invites distinguished thinkers to share their ideas in 18 minutes or less. This year’s speakers are human rights lawyer and agrarian reform advocate Atty. Kaka Bag-ao, public school teacher Sabsy Ongkiko, “master” of the office of the associate dean for academic affairs for ADMU Eddie Calasanz, attorney and viral video superstar Christopher Lao, Solar Power Factory inventor Alex Hornstein, and our very own editor-at-large (and award-winning filmmaker) Pepe Diokno. Invites have been handed out, but videos of the talks will be available online — for free.

Re-imagine Malacañang with â€˜President’s Office’

In “The President’s Office” artists re-imagine the Presidential Office, one of the areas in the Malacañang Palace that remains elusive to us commoners of the country. As part of the exhibit, participating artists construct the interiors and contents of the room based on their imagination and fantasies, which might take an interesting turn depending on the perception and style of the artist. The exhibit will be part of a series called “Blind Spots,” which explores forbidden places as avenues of self-expression and reconstruction. While we’ll be glad to find out what people are keeping in their secret places, we’d sure like to see what the artists think are in PNoy’s office. The exhibit runs until Feb. 9 at the Jorge B. Vargas Museum in the UP Diliman Campus.
