Koji Arsua - The Philippine Star

Catch Elton John and Sting

MANILA, Philippines - 2012 was a good year for concerts. This year alone, we had Katy Perry, Death Cab For Cutie, Lady Gaga, Morrissey, The Smashing Pumpkins, Snow Patrol, Maroon 5, David Guetta, Foster The People, and of course, Jennifer Lopez. This weekend, we’re rounding out the year with Elton John and Sting, who perform today and tomorrow, respectively. Their songs have transcended time, and are enjoyed across generations. See how these masters do it and be amazed.

Get a taste of Iran at Cinema in the Open-Air

Much of the Middle East’s culture is shrouded in mystery, with the name alone bringing images of war and political unrest. Frankly, it’s a shame because the region holds so much beauty in terms of art. But this time, we Filipinos can now have a taste of Iranian living in the mini-festival Cinema in the Open-Air. The event will feature seven prominent Iranian films over the course of four Saturdays, beginning today. Some films worth checking out are Here Without Me (Dec. 8), an adaptation of Tennesee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, Saint Mary (Dec. 15) and The Messiah (Dec. 15), two films that explore the life of Mama Mary and Jesus from an Iranian perspective and the Qur’an, and Iran: Seven Faces of Civilization (Dec. 8), a documentary that brings to life 7,000 years of the country’s history using advanced animation techniques. Screening happens at 7 p.m., at the Rizal Park Open-Air Auditorium. Admission is free, because what we love more than good films is free good films.

Give street cred to Botong Francisco’s ‘A Nation Imagined’

Street artists have to thank Botong Francisco, who revived the lost art of mural-making and elevated it to a National Artist-worthy endeavor. After all, what is street art but murals with attitude? This year, the Ayala Museum and the Ayala Foundation are teaming up to showcase Francisco’s works in time for the artist’s birth centenary. The exhibit will feature 40 works, from studies and sketches to large-scale paintings, some of which have never been seen in public. The pieces will be accompanied by an exclusive short film by Peque Gallaga, which will show the public murals the artist has made. Years have passed since Botong’s passing, but he is still the original “vandal.” Show some respect. Show started last Dec. 4 and will continue until March 31, 2013 at the Ayala Museum.
