FOLLOW/UNFOLLOW: Trolling in the deep

- Cate de Leon - The Philippine Star

Let’s face it. The Internet is not a nice place to be. It allows people to express their scrutiny, judgment, and hate at lightning speed. Before the Internet, you needed a semblance of fame to have someone you don’t know trolling you. Not in this day and age. No man is too obscure for infamy to find him in an hour. And while the people behind such attacks are usually either anonymous cowards or just faceless sheep going with the flow of the latest lynch mob, we’ve singled out a few suspects who’ve established at least a part of their identity through picking on people. Some of them make sense, some do so for a cause, some are just plain entertaining, and some are none of the above. Here’s a short list of trolls we think you should follow/unfollow.

Anti-Epal on Facebook

Under normal circumstances, we don’t believe in publicly shaming anybody. But there is nothing normal about the levels of self promotion in this country. And since passing an Anti-Epal bill, or any kind of bill for that matter, is bound to take a few years, social media has come up with the next best thing for us to do while waiting — trolling credit-hungry politicians on Facebook to give them the kahihiyan they should have been instilled with during their formative years. This page can also serve as reference come the 2013 elections.

@teddyboylocsin

Here’s one guy you should never start a fight with (although for the most part, you probably won’t have to). In his own words, “You guys will never win… You are up against genius and right.” Do we agree with this statement? Not really. But we always get a crack out of following the journalist’s many Twitter altercations. We can’t quite explain it. Even when we know we’re supposed to be annoyed, for some reason we’re too busy snorting.

Professionalheckler.wordpress.com

The professional heckler is a humor blogger who doesn’t take the art of trolling too seriously. The guy is living proof that if you’re good at making people laugh, they’ll let you get away with saying pretty much anything about anybody—from making the expose on epal politicians more entertaining to questioning the political capabilities of artistas who are still too eager to make that cross.

Getrealphilippines.com

This site first caught our attention when one of their bloggers called Carlos Celdran a “bad influence to the Filipino people” more than a month ago for petitioning online against a high rise condominium that would deface the Rizal monument. Basically the argument was that we’re not Paris, we’re an ugly country, get real.

The site tries to deliver what it considers to be cutting edge opinions on Philippine society. But really, all it does is cut — badly — riding Filipinos down for every reason they can conceive, from attacking the way we think to commenting on how PNoy should ditch his partisan color, yellow, and start wearing the national colors (a cheesy visual that we cannot unsee). We at Supreme certainly welcome people to bitch about society and the people in it, but we prefer that it comes with a decent level of analysis, or at least makes us laugh. This site accomplishes neither.

@annabellerama2

We should probably be shaking in our boots, waiting for Annabelle Rama to bludgeon us to death with 16 consecutive pasabog tweets for landing her in this list, but we’re also tired of the heightened drama and how she has no concept of appropriate and inappropriate timing. Then again, who are we kidding? We can be certain that cameras will be swinging her way the moment she finds her next arch enemy.

@djmotwister

Yes, he still has a job and apparently is still picking on people. It took a while for us to notice. Exposing an ex-girlfriend’s alleged abortion can be a hard one to top — not that we want more from this guy. Whether he’s making the big news at the expense of someone else’s reputation or having to content himself with poking jokes at a TV personality’s panty-peep on Instagram, we’ve grown weary of this guy.
