Show Of The Week: The Oscars

The Oscars eclipsed the Twitter trending topics, a list of unusual hashtags that never appear on one’s timeline. The biggest surprise was Meryl Streep’s Best Actress win for The Iron Lady. Meryl’s decorated career won her only three Oscars out of 17 noms, but fans are not disappointed because they know she’ll be nominated almost every year. Another surprise was Angelina Jolie’s leg, which kept popping out of the slit of her Versace gown, prompting a Twitter account (@AngiesRightLeg) and a meme where it appears in weird places. To cap off the evening, a Filipino vodka distilled from coconut named VuQo (get it?) is part of the goodie bag, making the night extra fun for Meryl and both Angie’s legs.

Ice Cream Of The Week: Magnum

Ice cream giant Magnum hit Philippine shores this Tuesday, much to the delight of Pinoys cursing the sudden heat. The ice cream, which is advertised as the first of its kind for the adult market, is known for its risqué ads and celebrity endorsers such as Eva Longoria, Eva Mendes and Rachel Bilson. Sex seems to be the focal point of the product, but its goodness, a rich creamy center coated in Belgian chocolate (in classic, almond, and chocolate truffle flavors), is enough for us and the impending summer. Add to that the country’s brand ambassadors Liz Uy, Tessa Prieto Valdes, Raymond Gutierrez, Rajo Laurel, and Solenn and Erwan Heussaff, and you don’t need sex to sell Magnum. All you need is… Magnum.

International Beauty Of The Week: Marian Rivera

Marian Rivera joined the ranks of Victoria’s Secret models in an online list of Top 10 International Beauties of 2012 in TopTenz. Marian placed ninth on a list that included supermodels Laetitia Casta, Miranda Kerr and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. The site’s name may sound dubious, but Marian’s international recognition is the kind of thing that we Filipinos love. No explanations were provided but with a face like hers, no words are needed. Perhaps they should have included her ability to remain relevant in spite of all the controversies, but her place on the list — along with her boyfriend Dingdong’s mention as one of the 25 Sexiest Men of the World by E! — makes all of her catfights null and void.

Sendoff Of The Week: Taken By Cars To Perform For Sxsw

This is it, folks. As the first Filipino indie band to be invited by the SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas, Taken by Cars will be headlining Abduction, their first concert at Republiq Club in Newport, City. The gig will also serve as their send-off party, since the band will be Texas-bound by next week. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. with a door charge of P600. The band is still raising funds via Artiste Connect, so you can opt to make a pledge at the event or by logging on to artiseconnect.com. Since Supreme is one of Abduction’s media sponsors, we’ll see you there! — Cai Subijano

Mall Of The Week: Lucky Mall In Binondo

Chief Supremo Tim Yap’s tweets broke the news of Lucky Chinatown Mall’s grand opening on Monday. The new mall, situated in the heart of Binondo, is a Chinese lifestyle mall featuring local and international brands, Chinese restaurants, four cinemas, and a heritage museum, all in four floors. However, its main attraction, besides the dragon in the center, seems to be the first Chinese-inspired Starbucks, complete with latticework reminiscent of Imperial China. We think that more themed branches should open, and this one is perfect for sipping those Frappuccinos (or tea, if you’re feeling the mood to be Chinese) and scouting for cute chinitos

Skyway Of The Week: Buendia To Balintawak

Good news for yuppies and party animals! A skyway project, is being proposed by Citra-PNCC, will build a six-lane highway from Buendia to Balintawak, making travel time between the two destinations by a mere 10 minutes. The Citra-PNCC Alignment or CPA will have eight entrances and exits, from Buendia, Quirino Avenue, Plaza Dilao, Aurora Boulevard, E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue, Quezon Avenue, Sgt. Esguerra Street, and Balintawak. Currently, everything is all set and only awaiting P-Noy’s approval, and we’re desperately hoping for good news amid the Corona trial. Building this skyway would greatly decongest EDSA and more importantly, Makati clubs and bars would only be a short drive away. Saguijo na ‘to!
