Best of the Week: Barefoot divas, cover showdowns and ghosts of issues past

Showdown Of The Week: Preview And Mega

Local fashion bibles Preview and Mega recently unveiled their April covers — both unwittingly with the same concept. The Preview cover features leading lady Toni Gonzaga “bright and beautiful,” as shot by photographer Jeanne Young. Meanwhile, Mega features Star Power grand champion Angeline Quinto as shot by photog Niko Villegas. In a surprising twist, the magazines were thrust into a “Who wore it better?” showdown, with the magazines’ respective aesthetics highlighted in the comparison. The winner? The local publishing industry. Anytime magazines step it up and foster healthy competition is a sign that the industry is alive and well.

Feature Of The Week: Metro’s “On Fire”

Everyone loves glitz and glamor. Lord knows Supreme does. But every so often, it’s good to highlight people who are, you know, actually doing something. For its April issue, the fresh and rebooted Metro magazine comes out with a star-studded folio, this time highlighting men and women passionate about their causes. With celebrities and non-celebrities (from Heart Evangelista to Gang Badoy) sharing space, it shows how anyone can be an advocate for change.

Tmi Reveal Of The Week: Rihanna

In the new issue of Rolling Stone, S&M enthusiast Rihanna, obviously not satisfied with dishing on her songs, gives us even more information about her sex life. “I’m not dating… I’m not even sexing. It’s on complete nil… I haven’t gotten a d**k picture in a long time,” she says. Obviously, there’s a reason why the girl can’t stop singing about boys going “downtown with a girl like her” and humping stage props. Girl needs to get laid. “You think you’re disappointed?” she says. “Try being in this body.”

Fairy Godmother Of The Week: The Barefoot Contessa

For those of you who are not familiar with Ina Garten, better known as The Barefoot Contessa, she’s that overly welcoming woman on Food Network that prepares dinner for friends while having picnic with her family, all with ease and confidence comparable to Kim Chiu wearing her endorsed brand of panty liner. The woman makes cooking look very effortless! Because of this, she’s earned legions of fans around the world, including six-year-old cancer patient Enzo Peredo. The boy, who has terminal-stage leukemia, was earlier refused twice by Ina Garten for him to be invited to the show — a move that was heavily criticized by bloggers and news outlets. In his third request though, aided by the Make-A-Wish Foundation where the Contessa is a sponsor, Enzo’s appeal was granted and he will be finally coming to the set of the show. A spokesperson denied the accusations that the Contessa was insensitive and heartless to the request of a sick kid, claiming they receive over a hundred requests in a month. But seriously? Making amends to fulfill a dying kid’s wish shouldn’t be that hard, eh?!

Aging Diva Of The Week: Britney Spears

Gone are the days when Britney can say “Oops, I did it again!” and be forgiven for her naivete. These days, she spends her time wearing skimpy clothing and trying to reach her toes while apparently “performing” in concert. In a preview she did for Good Morning America, Britney was heavily criticized for her performance, with many dubbing it as lackluster. She performed a whole set from her newest album released this week, Femme Fatale, and many didn’t like it. Online opinion was filled with the words “aging” and “osteoarthritis,” referring to a particular dance move when Britney was supposed to bend over. Fans also saw less of her dance moves in the concert, which led to more disappointment. Poor Britney, she just wants her career back but look what that got her?! An Anlene endorsement!
