To the extreme, the second Supreme Awards
Brainstorming for a year-ender issue is always fun, as you look back at a full year’s worth of highlights and lowlights. Staging an awards show to encapsulate Pinoy pop culture in 2010, however, is another thing. You know your Team Supreme somehow always chooses the harder route, just to give you, our dear reader, an “out-of-print” body experience, thus, the second annual Supreme to the Extreme Awards!
Looking back is essential for us to be able to move forward. There is always something to learn and laugh about the past year, and, just 10 days to go before Christmas, Supreme braved the yuletide rush and went against the 25,000 other events happening in the metro that 15th day of December. The result? An unprecedented gathering of pop culture’s A to Z, all of whom affected the way we lived, loved, laughed and looked at things. Why an awards show? Well, we need to give these peeps a pat on the back with our golden Supreme statuette so others may follow suit and lead equally meaningful and inspiration-filled lives. It’s not like we’re gonna give recognition to people who made our lives more boring, right?
After months of brainstorming, a few event postponements, here we were, Team Supreme on major multi-tasking mode—David Milan for the designs, Raymond Ang for the ushers and Ministry of Fun for the production requirements. We’ve been lucky with the people we have on our team, and I am supremely grateful.
From Venus Raj To Maria Ressa
Maria Reesa and Venus Raj Maria Ressa was the first to arrive at the event, arm-in-arm with her parents who were visiting from the US. Venus Raj made a grand entrance, true to form. Gang Badoy came straight from prison (where she teaches) and Carlos Celdran came straight from a sister’s birthday dinner. Atom Henares moved his flight to the next day just to make it to the awards while Dra. Vicki Belo came minus Hayden. Another early bird was Pia Magalona, who came with son Arkin, even if it was way past his bedtime. Arkin has the distinction of being the youngest person to have entered the party halls of Opus.
Movie stars, rockstars, celebrities, It girls and boys — all noisemakers, all newsmakers. When you put these movers and shakers together, natural combustion happens. Gretchen Barretto almost walked out because she couldn’t stand cigarette smoke, Atom Henares and Vicki Belo kissed onstage as proof that they are BFX (Best friends with your ex), Liz Uy snubbed me onstage (as a joke, guys — don’t panic) when I asked her about dating PNoy and more. Carlos didn’t raise up his Damaso sign but him being there with Gang Badoy meant a lot to us, for these two are some of the most admired individuals by the staff.
When the above-mentioned peeps gather, heat is produced, and whether we like it or not, these people had a big impact on how we’ll see the year 2010. After all the hullabaloo over everything, it’s nice to sit back, relax, laugh a little and learn from the year that was—to the extreme, yes that’s how the year went...and back. In the end, that is what makes life more colorful. No matter what you’ve been through this year—front page or not—you’ll soon realize it’s all worth it.
