Little Dress Me Up

STEALTH & STALK - Daryl Chang -

Because sometimes grownups can look too contrived, too thought-out and a bit too predictable, I went to the kingdom of mini-me’s to desaturate myself from the world of serious fashion business. This new mini style army not only has the sartorial pond rippling with their wardrobe choices, they’re also providing a delightful alternative to the usual street style inspiration.

Pedestrian eye for style Scott Schuman even goes as far as saying that “children dress to express, not impress. They pick clothes that reflect their own crazy attitudes.” Something even a few of the mature ones could take pointers from.

And the good thing is, even if they all come out mismatched, uncoordinated, unstyled and totally not trend-led, they still manage to look adorable because kids are just intrinsically licensed to get away with anything.

Lourdes Leon

Thirteen-year-old Lourdes is not exactly a kid anymore. But Madonna’s firstborn obviously still relishes her youthful freedom — experimenting to find her own personality. Right now, she expresses herself with a dark and almost brooding musician vibe complete with the prerequisite prints, plaids, clashing patterns and ultra-tight skinnies. Leather jackets and boots are thrown somewhere in the mix as well. The only difference from the apparent hipster uniform is the designer footwear, Ferragamo for Yamamoto sneakers on the left and covetable studded Louboutin loafers on the right.

Planetawesomekid.Com

Think street style but for the 12-and-under set. This website not only showcases tasteful junior individuality, it also ties up with children-based charities to support underprivileged kids. How can you not love fashion that’s guilt-free?

Shiloh Jolie-Pitt

Gossip waggers are all abuzz about Shiloh’s gender issues because of Angelina’s interview in Vanity Fair: “She wants to be a boy, so we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys’ everything. She thinks she’s one of the brothers.” But for me, seriously, lay off the kid! She’s only four years old. Girls go through some sort of tomboy phase in their lives, I know I did. The great thing about being a girl is that we can embody both sides and still be uncategorized. Check for the androgynous styling on little Shiloh — mini fitted blazers paired with round-neck shirts, a Henley on the left and a nautical striped pullover on the right.

Suri Cruise

Now if there’s one celebrity offspring that champions the feminine girly-ness in all its frills and pompery, it has to be pretty Suri. I have this really weird aversion to seeing little girls in heels (apparently my fashion liberalism finds a limit when it comes to kids ages one to five trying to look too grown-up), but on Suri, it just looks adorable. I know many would side with me when I say that heels on little girls are sort of disturbing. But in Suri’s defense, her gold T-strap with kitten heels are ballroom shoes for kids. So I’m guessing it should be naturally safe.

Willow Smith

Obviously channeling the pop stars of today down to the side-shaved head, Willow, Will Smith’s daughter, looks like a stylized mini-Rihanna. This nine-year-old rocks the fall Military trend on the red carpet with animal print jodhpurs and lace-up boots (left), and a petit Balmain-inspired ensemble on the right, with an olive pea coat with epaulettes and high shine leggings. If you think she’s dressing too mature for her age, how about 11-year-old Karate Kid Jaden’s six-pack?
