A Myx of Pop Princess, Joe Mari Chan and MJ

SUPREMO - Tim Yap -

Myx has gone a long way from its karaoke-slash-song-hits-on-TV days to being the number one (or dare I say, the only one) homegrown music station in the country. With music exclusives, more “mass appealing” mix of VJs, exclusive artist interviews, and performances, they were able to win both industry and market to tune in to their Studio 23 home.

Aside from the local and international artists who launch their videos and the audience who appreciates them, due credit goes to Myx head Andre Alvarez and Myx manager Mila Labandia, who have stuck by their posts as guardians of the scene for some time now. They’ve been doing their jobs without fanfare — just plain hard work, the old-fashioned way. “It’s for the glory of the music industry,” Andre told me backstage before I presented the Favorite Group Award, which went to Spongecola.

While watching the interesting pairing of Pao Valenciano with Ram Nievera, I was sandwiched between Pop Star Princess Sarah Geromino — the night’s biggest winner as she bagged four wins: Favorite Media Soundtrack (Record Breaker), Favorite Remake (You Changed My Life), Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Artist — and Rhian Ramos, who is coming out with an album. This girl can really sing, too. That, along with her upcoming music videos, is something worth watching.

The highlight of my night was the Jose Mari Chan tribute medley, as performed by Jay-R, Richard Poon, Yeng Constantino, Jayson Fernandez of Rivermaya, Rachel Ann Go, Kean Cipriano of Callalily, and Christian Bautista. There was also the back-to-back performances of Hilera’s Radical and Rico Blanco, who wowed the crowd not only with his highly energetic rendition of his anthemic hit song Ayuz. And I didn’t know Rico could dance like that! He impressed the Music Museum audience with his MJ moves, making it the most-talked-about performance of the evening.

If you weren’t there at the awards show, you can catch the Myx Music Awards as it airs on MYX today, March 6 (Saturday) at 7:30 p.m. with encore telecasts on March 15 (Monday) at 1:30 p.m. and March 19 (Friday) at 7 a.m.  For the complete list of airing schedules, tune in to Myx (Sky Cable Channel 23) and www.myxph.com.
