Lulu Tan-Gan to show knits and a whole lot more

-

MANILA, Philippines - Fashion brands have been defined by key design styles born out of the daring to become the first to set trends that remain relevant even for generations to come. Forever etched in our minds are the menswear-inspired fashion and simplicity pioneered by Coco Chanel, wrapped jersey dresses by Diane Von Fürstenberg, and cone-bra corsets by Jean-Paul Gaultier. They continue to inspire a whole new generation of designers to this day.

In the Philippine fashion scene, Lulu Tan-Gan’s name has been synonymous with knitwear since 1985.

After more than two decades, the Tan-Gan brand continues to flourish in a tropical country. It is testament enough to the versatility of the material, the designer, and her brand. Tan-Gan’s knits have been stretched, molded, remolded, and reformed from caftans to halters to tunics to bohemian asymmetrical designs to regular knitted polo shirts. It has been worn by women of all ages, sizes, and persuasions.

Stepping Out

For several years now, Lulu Tan-Gan has represented the Philippines in various international trade events. As a board member of the Fashion and Design Council of the Philippines, she has tirelessly worked to promote the Filipino label and compete in the global market. For Lulu, wearing a Filipino trademark means expressing one’s Filipino identity.

The Fusion

From the readily identifiable classic Tan-Gan straight line knits, the Tan-Gan knit-piñawear collection not only merges piña with knits but also mixes these with nipis, another fine traditional fabric hand-woven by a group of women from the lowland communities. The exquisite embroidery tradition of the Filipinos also now finds visual expression in the merging of lace and beadwork applied in design patterns.

Tan-Gan’s knit-piñawear collection includes creations that can be worn elegantly at work and casually if paired with a classy pair of jeans. Another variant of the collection shows dresses and gowns perfect for the modern Filipina, whether it is for attending socials or for walking down the aisle. Piña is best known for its luxurious feel and combining it with the versatile knit makes it appropriate for any occasion, especially for jet-set parties and weddings.

Metrowear Icon 2009, featuring Lulu’s vision as seen through her knit-piñawear collection, will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the NBC Tent, Fort Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
